The reasons for Doctor Who's hiatus after Season 26 have very little to do with the quality of the writing, acting, or direction. But as you acknowledge yourself, the BBC (Michael Grade and later Jonathan Powell) hadn't liked Doctor Who for years, and placing it opposite Coronation Street and cutting the budget so heavily that everything was filmed on 1" video tape instead of 2" -- in effect setting it up to fail -- was an excuse to kill a show they were ashamed of because it wasn't a prestige drama.

There's always one clown who thinks everyone cares about their tired, outdated opinions. No one does, dear.

I always have to restrain the laughter at the clods who genuinely believe that the likes of Pertwee "classics" like The Time Monster and The Claws of Axos are better than the likes of Fenric and Ghost Light. The cognitive dissonance is staggering. What's less forgivable is that these bores always feel the need to shove their tedious oar in and bring the mood down when everyone else is happily discussing these wonderful pieces of television.

Hey now, Axos is *groovy*. (Although I recognize it's objectively not very good, I've always had a soft spot for those golden people and their floral print.)

Not sure that's accurate. Shouldn't it be : In 1989 Dr Who was an embarassment to the BBC who had long tried to scrap it. Thanks to the 7th Doctor and his companion Ace , season 26 enabled the BBC to do so and (bar the tv movie) it vanished for 16 years.

Is that revitalisation?
For a detailed analysis of the reasons and context to which the show was eventually cancelled in 1989 I would recommend Richard D. Carriers excellent web series for the show. Part 8 looks at the McCoy era if you don't want to watch the whole thing.

So another Doctor Who thread turns into mudslinging and people spewing their hatred of certain seasons and declaring it gospel truth. Why this fandom can't accept that others might enjoy eras that they don't and that some people enjoy stories/Doctor's they don't is beyond me. Enjoy your favourites but try respecting some people have different opinions. I grew up with the McCoy era so it will always hold a special place in my heart and I believe its ambition and story quality will always make it more than its budget allowed. So come in here and moan all you like; I'm gonna sit down and watch Curse of Fenric and enjoy one of the best stories I think the series has ever produced.

It would also appear that they've signed up this month specifically to ditch on this release.

I thought the McCoy era hatred was a thing of the past though I guess a lot of people just can't let these things go. It'll be the same for the people moaning about Whittaker; they'll just never get over it even in decades to come.

I would have thought the McCoy era was the absolute antithesis of the Whittaker one.

One with decent writing and dodgy production values, the other with decent production values and dodgy writing...

People can probably guess which is which

Good. I'm glad they moan. I have huge nostalgia and appreciation for the McCoy era, but others don't and it's great that they care enough about the show enough to rail against it 30 years later. It makes for some invigorating discussions.

Long may they moan. And if you feel your favourite franchise has been destroyed by poor creative differences then never let go of it. Don't let one side control the narrative. Ditto Star Wars, Star Trek, Marvel etc...

How boring if people just posted about things they liked.

I'm not saying people shouldn't debate things and discussion is always welcome but on a thread dedicated to a particular season why feel the need to steam in with the whole 'my opinion matters more than yours' that so many (not aimed at you personally) feel the need to shout about. So many fandoms aren't interested in discussion they just want to shout louder than others and a lot of people seem to believe the best way to do that is to slag off things others enjoy without any intention of having a reasonable discussion.

Not me. I'm over Whittaker. I don't care anymore. Plus her and Chibnall will almost definitely be gone in a matter of months anyway. I'll just view series 11 and 12 as a massive creative misfire (not the show's first, just the biggest) but unlike say Star Wars I believe Doctor Who will survive and return in a worthwhile form.

I love all Doctor Who. Every era has its ups and downs. Every era has classics and duds. It doesn't matter, it's all Doctor Who.

It doesn't matter who flies the TARDIS or wields the Sonic Screwdriver, they're still the Doctor no matter their race or gender.

I have stories and eras I like more than others and I have Doctors I like more than others... but I still love all of Doctor Who. I think just writing off whole eras or Doctors or getting angry over Doctor Who or arguing about whose opinion is right (answer: none of them are) is just pointless really. It's all the same show in the end and everything Doctor Who has something of value in it.

You blatantly aren't over it. If you didn't care you wouldn't have written the above. Amusing how you say they will "definitely" be gone; do you work for the BBC? Do you make the hiring and firing decisions? I'm guessing not and that you just read a bunch of websites and convinced yourself it was true. The truth is no one outside of the actor; the show runner and the BBC executives know how long they will be in their roles.

And Star Wars is doing just fine thanks for asking.

It's a hugely popular term lately on arstechnica, which a tech-news site with one of the nastiest, poorly-moderated discussion sections I've ever seen. The mud-slinging in the article comment sections is appalling for such an "informed and intelligent" base of readers.

Doctor Who (1963-77) & Star Wars (1977-83) R.I.P.

So you like The Sunmakers but from Underworld onwards....?

(For me, Doctor Who ended in 1989, when the Doc and Ace headed off for new adventures (and New Adventures) at the climax of Survival.)

People are entitled to their opinions, of course, and if somebody doesn't like a certain era of the show then that's fine. I have noticed, however, that people are becoming increasingly dramatic about this kind of thing nowadays. People saying RIP to properties that are still in existence, accusing things of "destroying my childhood" etc... The latter being utter nonsense, of course, because you can't retroactively change a childhood that you already experienced. It's far less exhausting to just say, "Nah, I'm really not into it."

I'm over caring. I still believe Chibnall totally ****ed over my favourite TV show and Whittaker was miscast and poorly directed but it doesn't make me angry any more. Chibnall's tenure has turned into a PR disaster and a commercial failure, he (and Whittaker) will be gone sooner rather than later.
