Default The Painted Bird (2019) Vaclav Marhoul

I couldn't find a thread for this film, so I made this one.

Sorry if there already is one, somewhere.

This film looks absolutely incredible.

It just world premiered at Venice 2019 to both enormous acclaim and numerous walk-outs.

It is based on Jerzy Kosinski's famous 1965 novel, "The Painted Bird". It details a young boy's experiences as he treks alone and encounters a number of different characters in Europe during WWII during the Holocaust. The book, and now the film, are famous for portraying harsh brutality.

Vaclav Marhoul has made the film adaptation, which features Stellan Skarsgard, Harvey Keitel, Udo Kier, Barry Pepper, and Julian Sands... ALL actors with daring reputations.

It is allegedly a grueling experience as a film.

I am very much looking forward to it, personally.

From what little I've read of the film (I never read the book, sadly), I'm not at surprised that it prompted walk-outs. The subject matter definitely sounds pretty grim.

I want to see it whenever that chance arises.

Yes, they say a number of people were basically running for the exits.

It is a harsh film, to say the least. The book is REALLY out there.

But, most critics say it is a masterpiece. A difficult, challenging masterpiece, but a masterpiece, nonetheless.

Sounds rather unmissable. Gonna have to prepare myself psychologically for this.

Interesting, my immediate thought upon viewing the trailer was that it looked inspired by Come and See. Lo and behold, appearing in this new film is Aleksei Kravchenko, whom played the lead role in Come and See.

First of all, that trailer is NSFW.

And, I think you mean Kosiński's infamous novel, which he didn't even write. The Painted Bird was heavily plagiarized. In any case, the film looks brutal. We always get a Holocaust film (or three) this time of year, but this one seems to stand above the rest. I can't wait to see it.

I always considered the book to be unfilmable but I guess we'll see.

I first read Kosinsky's iconic The Painted Bird in the early '90's, and it's definitely one of the most disturbing, horrific, and brilliant novels I've ever read.
[Show spoiler]There is one scene where someone gets completely eaten by a swarm of rats, within minutes - quite horrible, but you felt this scum-bag guy deserved it - LOL.

I have 0 interest in seeing a film based on the novel; there is absolutely no way this will work, and I'm surprised that it's even being considered. I agree the book is unfilmable.

I just got the book - looking forward to reading and seeing the movie, does IFC have a time table for it's US release? I'm pretty sure the AFI will have it in it's European Union showcase in early December here in the DC/MD/VA area. I assume IFC might not submit it to the MPAA and just let it go out unrated.

Obviously, anyone can film anything they want - and, this is obvious given how much crap there is out there.

But, to me calling TPB "unfilmable" means that there is no way a movie can be made of this book that will truly capture the essence/vibe/tone of the novel. In fact, hearing about the movie coming out just made me want to re-read the book.

Finally watched the trailer, wow the cinematography on display here is amazing. I can't imagine walking out of a film, no matter how disturbing it is. It'll probably be difficult to sit through, yes, but I'm still very interested in seeing it.
