That's a very broad question...

I'll narrow it down to just films that I had a hugely emotional attachment to...

Of which there are only four:

Donnie Darko
Pan's Labyrinth
Sid & Nancy
Blade Runner

I have that on Laserdisc (Criterion)...still need to watch it.

5 year bump! Nice!

Hoosiers - I still remember back in 1986 (and I don't remember much at all from back then I was 5) my sister calling from the pay phone theater telling my dad how much she likes the movie and to come pick her up. We had it on VHS when it came out, DVD, and now blu-ray. We watched every year at the start of basketball season for about 10 years!

Christmas Vacation - watched it every Christmas from about 1990 - current

Kill Bill - went on a first date with the lady who, a few years later, would become my wife (crazy movie for a first date, right?)!

Moana - 1st movie we took our daughter to in theaters - We bought her a Moana outfit, wrapped it, and let her open it up before the movie, thanks to youtube she was already familiar with the songs about a week before the movie so had been singing them, we had a bunch of family members go, and it still remains her favorite animated movie

Dear to my heart for me is what I've seen during my childhood. Movies that made an impact on me.

Blazing Saddles
King Kong (1976)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Road Warrior
Conan the Barbarian
The Thing
Terminator 1 + 2
Ghostbusters 1 & 2
RoboCop
Total Recall
Star Wars (trilogy)
Indiana Jones (trilogy)
Predator 1 + 2
Aliens (I was 10 and I got nightmares watching that movie)
El Mariachi
Jurassic Park

These are movies that I've no problem watching every month if someone forces me to.

Other movies that I've seen as an adult that made an impact.
I'm a sucker for sci-fi so I've I'm sucked into a believable space environment or post-apocalyptic earth I forget what's around me and leave reality for a bit.

Independence Day (saw it on my 20th birthday )
Starship Troopers.
Oblivion
Prometheus
Rogue One
Sunshine
Wall-E

Hulk. It's a drama movie filled with superhero ingredients. Love it.
The Hunter with Willem Dafoe. Great drama
The Boondock Saints. Low budget with style

And anything dog related which fills me up, but two that stick out:
Eight Below and Hachi

Tough question. There are so many.

The two films that really got me into the medium as a youngster were 'Mississippi Burning' and 'Casablanca'. So I hold them very dear to my heart as I distinctly remember the feeling they gave me. I was unaware that films could be so good before I watched these 2. Others, for various reasons, are:

'500 Days of Summer'
'When Harry met Sally'
My Sassy Girl'
'Roma'
'Blue Valentine'
'Take Shelter'
'The Sure Thing'

Star Wars: I always remember in the early 80's, when we had HBO, running into to the living room when my parents were watching a movie and it started with the Fox Fanfare, hoping that Star Wars was on. Star Wars just consumed my life as a kid.

Blade Runner: I first saw it in '84 as a seven-year-old, and those effects and the dystopian setting left such an impression on me that I feel like I've been chasing that dragon ever since, with every sci-fi movie that has been released with comparisons to Blade Runner, but nothing has really come close.

Superman II: One of only two movies I saw at a drive-in. I just remember laying in the shelf of the backseat, right under the back window, and rolling down the seat thinking I was turning into Superman. My love of Superman was only surpassed by my Star Wars obsession as a kid. The other movie I saw at the drive-in? UHF.

Outside Providence: For starters, this is a really good, underrated movie that I would love to see released on Blu-ray. I had a little brother who died the day before Thanksgiving in 2000. Christmas that year was tough, but on one of the days that I was home with my family during that break, my mom had rented a couple of movies, this being one and the first Pirates of the Caribbean being the other. There were some really funny parts in Outside Providence, and it was just good to be able to laugh again as a family. Alec Baldwin, who I am not necessarily a fan of, did a bang up job in a supporting role, as he often does. This is one of the Farrely Brothers best movies.

Vanilla Sky: Not a great movie, but the first movie I saw with my now wife. Kind of a mind F--- to see on a date. Closely related would be Gigli. When this came out, we were both living at home, and we thought that Gigli would be a perfect movie to go "fool around" at, since it was so bad nobody else would be there. But, sure enough, there were three other couples there. I'm sure we all thought the same thing: "thanks for ruining this night."

Trainspotting: I first saw it in college, and I was completely entranced by it. I ended up getting the book, and while I think that the movie is equally good (not one of those "the book is sooo much better situations,") the book is a bit of a different experience. It turned me into an Irvine Welsh fan.

Clerks: As a Gen X'er, I feel like this movie is all you need to know about the generation, from the story to the indie, gritty production value. Clerks is hilarious, so I decided to write a paper in college using this movie to "define" Generation X. We had to critique each other's papers, and everyone else went with a generic description that they found online or in a magazine. I decided to use Clerks as the basis for my paper, focusing on Dante saying that Empire Strikes Back was his favorite movie, because just like life, it ended on a series of down notes. I always thought that sentiment was an apt description of Gen X. I got a 'C' on the paper.

Also near and dear:
  • Real Genius: such a pleasant 80's teen comedy.
  • Raiders of the Lost Ark: Duh.
  • Batman '89: I got completely sucked up into the hype train.
  • Dazed and Confused: There can't be many people who don't identify this movie with their own high school experience, in some way, no matter the year.
  • Almost Famous: I've always had a fascination with the rock bands and touring lifestyle of the 70's. A great story about the music biz before social media.
  • Good Will Hunting: I saw it in college, and it made me re-evaluate what friendship means to me.
  • Lords of Dogtown: Like Almost Famous, I have a fascination with the early days of skateboarding and the characters who were involved.

Andrei Tarkovsky's Nostalghia.

It is the movie that got me into art films. The most famous scene in the movie was a 'secret' hidden find in the game, Witness. Once I watched the scene, I was captivated, intrigued, and puzzled. Had to watch the whole movie + other works of Tarkovsky. That said, however, it is a movie that I cannot watch regularly because it requires a lot of concentration. If there ever is a poetic film, I think this would be it.

My life has not been the same since.

Now I want to watch it … all by myself … with a few pieces of KFC …

Two recent moments that pulled my Heart Strings

Star Trek (2009)
that opening scene
[Show spoiler](birth of James T Kirk)
gets me every single time....

Deadpool 2
When Wade
[Show spoiler]finally dies. He asks Vanessa "Is this Heaven?" She replies "Now it is."

Such an incredibly beautiful moment in an otherwise silly movie

Frequency (2000) such an underrated movie. Excellent time-travel story, but the father-son dynamic is so good.

Also love Predator and Terminator 2 - grew up obsessed with these movies.

Same here and I honestly don’t understand the premise of this thread. Not counting the rare blind-buy, any film I buy on BD, I buy because it’s “dear to my heart”. The films which I count as my favourites, I do so because they are “dear to my heart”. A list of my favourite films would be identical to anything I’d mention here.

[Show spoiler]Maybe a film(s) that were important to your formative years and possibly a story or antidote behind why that film(s). A film that represents a special time, place or fond memory of a loved one. As a fellow film lover I just like to hear the stories of others associated with film. I will be thinking of mine and hope some of you will participate as well.
We have some nice posts here: What's Your #1 Favorite Film and Why?

Pretty much every movie in my Top 20 below in my signature has some level of sentimental value to me.

The most recent one that connected with me deeply was Midsommar. I've been in emotionally abusive and codependent relationships in the past, and something about Ari Aster's writing and interpretation of that through Dani's eyes, in her relationship with Christian, in Florence Pugh's performance portraying Dani's catharsis, it all just really hit me hard in a profound way.

We also saw Kill Bill for our first date. While it wasn’t our first dance song, we did play “I Shot My Baby Down” at our reception although we did have the DJ give an introduction about that song.

Dear to my heart because they expanded and/or confirmed my worldview in some fashion:Twilight's Last Gleaming
Ragtime

Ruined me for most movies going forward from age 7-1/2: 2001: a space odyssey

Proved to me movies could make me fall down into the theater aisle laughing even though I was the only person in the whole cinema: Play it again, Sam

Movie that defied all of my expectations by delivering an absolutely perfect, yet cynicism-free ending: Bite the Bullet

Just realized I saw all of these for the first time before I turned 21 years old, except RAGTIME, for which I was 21 yrs and 1mth.

Besides the obvious SW OT, Back to the Future, Jurassic Park type mentions.

The Breakfast Club: First "R" rated movie I saw when my sister snuck it into the house and we watched it late at night on the VCR. As a pre-teen, I felt like I was such a rebel but was quickly drawn into the story of the pressures of growing up and finding one's identity and how universal it was then and still is now.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape: This movie was recommended to me by my mother because she knew I would love Arnie and I was completely sucked into the world of Endora and those characters. It's a movie that feels familiar and Endora feels like home in a way. This is one of my staples that I return to on a consistent basis where I feel content to live in that world again for 2 more hours.

Labyrinth and Never Ending Story: My aunt used to rent these every time we'd spend the night at her house and we'd watch them back to back. It further developed my fascination with the fantasy genre that movies like Star Wars and Back to the Future started.
