Default Is mastering for 4K HDR very expensive? Possible for lesser known titles?

So far, most classic UHD releases were for more popular movies. I'd love to see what a Rainer Werner Fassbinder picture would look like. His movies have such nice colors to begin with in YCbCr, but in HDR?

The question is if distributors will bother mastering movies that most people don't know.

It could be. The format is making more strides than I would have expected at this point. We're getting some tests, I think, with something like Suspiria which is the closest thing to that concept of a "little known" movie. And we are getting a disc version of the previously digital version only UHD/HDR It's a Wonderful Life.

Fassbinder would be a good one though, his films would be well-suited to the HDR format.

I had read an article a while back that the companies that do the master scans of films to 4k were backed up. So besides the costs of mastering there are issues with having enough companies to perform the work.

I'm fine waiting 10 years for all these titles to trickle out. I'd hate for whiny internet "demand" for HDR passes and 4K scans to be responsible for crappier standards than the Sony, Paramount and Warner Bros. level of output we've seen thus far.

Hopefully there is an internal understanding in these companies home video departments that quality control is an important aspect of this format, given it's niche status as it is.

Anyways. There is a lot of industry info that the cost of these is a minimum tens of thousand per title.

That sounds pretty interesting. You don't happen to have the link to said article, do you? I would love to read it.

Would be nice if Universal could consistently achieve the same standards as Sony, Paramount and WB.

4k and wide gamut shouldn't really cost that much, wide gamut even makes it easier since you don't have to do much to make it fit so one might say it should even be less effort and cost overall than 2k REC709

HDR might take some time and money
