Default Reviews PQ.

Hi,

I was wondering if in further reviews (specially reviews of catalog titles), you could another column, in between the Picture quality and Audio quality.

As it is now most reviews simply state how the quality fares against other blu-rays, tho some reviews mention difference in quality to the DVD.

I think perticularly on the catalog titles, it would be great to add something like "DVD vs Blu-ray quality". Maybe getting the reviewer to check the DVD of the movie aswell. As some films might not look super on Blu-ray (compared to reference quality), but still look far superior to their DVD counterparts (whilst some don't look much better than upscaled DVD - See Full metal jacket).

As it is now, compared to reference quality, some movies might get quite low Picture quality ratings, but would still be a great upgrade in quality from the DVD, and it would be a nice addition imo.

Now I know, some will say blu-ray is always better, but point being, how much better than the DVD is the release.

/P

I think it all comes down to how good of a job the reviewer does in explaining the reasoning behind their PQ rating. Most of the better reviewers do a good job in explaining this, but I don't know that it's cost-effective or feasible to send out DVD screeners with BD screeners for comparison, because if they do it on catalog releases, they'd have to do it on new releases, too.

See the recent thread here in Feedback about viewer/user reviews for some examples of good and bad rating explanations.

This is what I do to determine whether a BD is a buy for me.

If either the PQ or AQ is rated at 3 or less...I won't buy it. For the extra money needed to purchase a BD, I want at least a 3.5 rating on both! And even then it's not always a guarenteed purchase.

Not to be snarky, but this is Blu-ray.com.....our reviewers review Blu-ray discs and shouldn't be encumbered by having to review the DVD version as well or even make a comparison.

By default, any blu-ray is going to end up being better in the PQ department at this point. It seems like a waste to me. I'd rather have it stacked up against other BD's. It's a lot of work to track down some of these DVD releases- even with new releases they probably don't get screeners and would thus have to purchase them.

yea would be alot easier had this site been around when dvds were upcoming and had old reviews lying around. Alot of the dvd comparison is based on the reviewer having seen the DVD release prior.By default a 1080p movie is gonna look better than a 480p movie. You are asking alot of a reviewer to screen a movie twice and do some biopsy of a movie that ultimately isnt that important . The main focus i on new releases as they sell many more copies than catalog

I think next we should have them compare it to the VHS then to DVD and then to Blu-ray

there are also a number of reviewers that are out there that do this as well. at one point or another, a number of people would clamor for more details, heck ask for more screenshots, of both the dvd and the blu-ray format. as a reminder, most folks that do review movies for us are doing this out of goodwill, and not getting any benefits, as like our mods. purely voluntary at some point.

if you'd like such, there are a number of websites that do side by side comparisons.

To be fair though, reviewers here are being compensated. They also get the screeners.

I try to do this with my reviews if I have a copy of the DVD. Otherwise it get's too expensive to purchase a DVD just for the comparison to the Blu-ray disc. Since I rarely watch DVD's anymore, I don't have much use for them and its just money down the drain.
