The 3 disc DVD is still worth picking up as it has two earlier adaptations of the book.

One of Bogart's very finest performances is In A Lonely Place and see Orson Welles amazing performance in Touch Of Evil. Also recommend Kiss Me Deadly, not really noir but a very violent subversion of Spillane's book filled with venal, sadistic, brutal and fatally curious characters memorably played.

The Maltese Falcon has one of the all time greatest end lines, a layered meaning referencing Shakespeare's "Such stuff as dreams are made on", the insubstantiality of dreams and maybe in the policeman's preceeding line, their worthlessness.
