Default Finalizing Blu-ray

When do you think Blu-Ray's specs will be finalized?

I can not argue the fact that the HD-DVD camp can say that one reason they like HD-DVD is because it is finalized. All players out will work with current and future HD-DVD titles.

I like the idea of what Profile 1.1 and 2.0 are going to bring to the table. But in all honestly, I do not know if these features are something that I will use in the long term. But will 2.0 be the final step, or will the spec be ever evolving? The good thing is that the doors are not closed to what Blu-Ray can offer in the future. But I do not want to look at Blu-Ray players and movies like you look at PC's or PC gaming. Where you have to make sure you read the requirements of the movie you wish to purchase or watch to ensure it is compatible with the profile of your BD player to enjoy the full Blu experience.

I am all for expanding the Blu-Ray experience and what Blu-Ray have to offer. At the time I also own the most versatile and seemingly most upgradeable BD player available, the PlayStation 3. I am just wondering what the final version of BD movies will be and when it will be implemented.

The thing about the profiles is that they're backwards compatible, so all future movies will work just fine on current Blu-ray players. They may have extra features that will only work on newer players, but people with current players will still be able to get everything out of future releases that they can get out of current releases.

yes, another example, read this review of Terminator 2 on HD DVD:
http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=65626

"I've found no way of selecting alternative audio streams or subtitles on the Xbox 360 - there are no buttons on the remote to do directly and there are no menu options to allow setup. So, if you're a non-English speaker or are hard of hearing you may have problems."

To quote kjack on the topic of HD DVD spec completeness:

Yea I think the main point is what NutsAboutPS3 said. Blu-ray is all backwards compatable. Therefore it means upgrades and future potential are unlimited however everything down the road will still work with a PS3 or with the Samsung BD-P1000 or Sony BDP-S1.

All that's been announced is the BD 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0 Hardware profiiles.

What makes you think the specs for these (or BD-J) are not finalized?

Lots of people say/assume that, but is there confirmation from an insider that that is the case?

The following insider post indicates that BD-J is complete for example:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=598

As for the future beyond these, you can't hold back innovation, but as long as discs will be backwards compatible there's no problem.

I've been very pleased with the PS3 as my sole provider for Blu-ray movies. Once the PS3 is surpassed with capabilities, I'll buy the appropriate stand-alone. For now, I'm

the way I look at it is profile 1.1 and 2.0 (anything above that that matter) is simply an expansion from the base. Am I wrong in thinking that if I have a first gen BD player and a BD 2.0 disc that I'll still be able to watch the movie, just nothing that the profile extra's want, I don't see how not having internet support in a player will stop you from watching a movie.

So I think the base blu-ray functionality is finalized but those in control of BD also realize that the technology can be used for more.

If HD-DVD is complete, then why is Toshiba talking about a triple layer 51GB disc with higher bandwidth?

Ok, maybe I needed to do a little more research on the finalization of HD-DVD, but I do not own HD-DVD or plan to, so I was taking what I read as some truth. I was unaware of some of the problems that they had with their disc and players. Especially their "value" add-on player for the 360.

I was aware that the profiles of Blu-Ray are backwards compatible and even the 2.0 and beyond profiles would still be able to offer the basic movie playback on the earlier gen players. I was just wondering when will Blu-Ray be finalized as a spec. In my original post, I did state that I am all for the expanding and improvement of the format, I was just wondering is there a end in sight.

I like my PS3 as a video game system and as a Blu-Ray player. Down the line I may and most likely will own a stand alone player. I just want to have the knowledge that I am able to fully experience what Blu has to offer me. For now it does look like the PS3 is in the best position to offer that.
