I was going to pick this up for this Christmas. I love the look of this classic. Silly Framing Device but the rest is Wonderful.
I am curious if it has the missing scene. According to Wiki: "A scene remains missing from the DVD version that was included in the original television program. In the scene, the Ghost of Christmas Past takes Scrooge to a large country home. In it we see Belle later in life. Her husband and children come home, and it is obvious that they are a happy family getting ready for Christmas. Belle's husband remarks to Belle "I saw an old friend of yours in town today," i.e., Scrooge, and tells Belle how mean and unhappy he looked. Belle turns and stares at the snow falling outside the window and the tune from "Winter Was Warm" is reprised. This scene underlines the happiness that Scrooge missed out on, and also demonstrates the sense of loss that Belle still feels even though she lives such a good life. The CW acquired the broadcast rights to the special for the 2014 season." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mister...hristmas_Carol The Wiki Page has it at a Minute Longer (53 as opposed to 52) than the folks here at Blu-ray.com. |

Wow, that's interesting. Been watching this special for the last 30 years, and have never seen that piece with Belle.

Just FYI: I ordered this on Blu-Ray early in November (2014) and almost immediately after I ordered it, it became Unavailable.
I would check back occasionally to see if it had become available and had been shipped, hoping to get mine for Christmas. No such luck. I still haven't received it. Amazon was cool and apologized and told me it should be available in early January. I'm assuming the Producer of this Classic ran-out of warehoused copies and is waiting for his Manufacturer to produce more. Oh well... And a little more FYI: I've been ocassionally checking back at Amazon's website to see if it had been shipped or not, and noticed that one of Amazon's After-Market sellers ("Through The Stacks LLC") has just started selling it for $199.99. I can only assume they saw that it wouldn't be available for Christmas from Amazon, are are being so very helpful and generous by making it available to us Poor Appreciators... at only a small $180 profit, capitalizing on Our and Amazon's misfortune. The Irony of this fantastic Tale's Moral has obviously gone amiss with the Lovely generous folks at "Through The Stacks LLC." Buyer Beware. Last edited by albabe; 12-27-2015 at 03:42 PM. |

That scene was cut before the show aired. The only alterations from the original broadcast:
1. The opening originally had sponsor TIMEX flashing on some buildings, before a pan over to the main title. The main title now recycles to cover the missing shot. 2. Marley's shadow flying over Magoo's head was added for the 2nd airing on NBC. (1963) 3. There was an animated TIMEX bumper at the end of the show. 3. Two of the closing title cards were reshot for the 2nd NBC broadcast, to add additional credit to a couple of people. (1963) |

I bought this not realizing I already had it in a collection of Christmas movies. This edition has subtitles but no extras or commentaries, and the audio & video quality looks the same as the copy in the collection. Runtime is the same too. I'll sell or give away my extra copy.

So, is the Universal release a different transfer than the 2010 release? The original release has some nasty DNR/Scratch Removal during the "All Alone in the World Scene." The pictures on the blackboard, and the lines on the Ghost of Christmas Past are completely eliminated.

I’m watching the 2010 version’s scene now, around 24:00 and as far as I can tell, it all looks great. Very clear. Every time we see the Blackboard the Drawings all look very crisp and the Ghost is well delineated every time we see Her.

The camera pans from right to left and the lines on the Chalkboard seem to strobe a tint bit but none disappear on mine. And the ghost is always fine.

I always assumed that the Ghost of Christmas Past was supposed to be a young lad but I guess there is ambiguity. |
