Hello all, bit of help/advice please,
I'm a new owner of a Sony STR-DG820 and have 7.1 speakers connected up to it and currently using my PS3 (set to LPCM) for my BD player. I understand that i have to have my amp set to 'AFD AUTO' to get the proper HD audio tracks. I'm a little unsure of the 'MATRIX' capabilities so have this question. If i set the sound on my amp to 'E SURROUND' i can get audio from my back surround speakers. Am i still getting HD sound from 5.1 and just matrixing to the back speakers or am i losing the HD audio track because of the 'E SURROUND' setting. I hope I'm making sense - any help very much appreciated. Thank you in advance. ![]() Last edited by *** Nomis1 ***; 03-09-2009 at 07:07 PM. |

I don't think you want to be using the AFD, otherwise known as "Auto Format Direct". This is typically used if you want to take a 2 channel audio source, like an audio CD, and "matrix" is to the surround speakers. Speaking only for myself, I never use a surround mode when listening to audio music. The "E Surround" is another mode of what I just explained, but otherwise known as "Enhanced". This is where your Pro Logic II, Pro Logic IIx, Neo:6 modes, and Neural comes into play. This is something I use on two channel audio programing direct from the tv, or for instance when my daughter watched Spongebob episodes. This isn't something that will make your surround speakers COME ALIVE!!!, it just enhances it abit more than using just your L/R mains. What your going to want to do for HD audio is make sure your receiver is set to LPCM, and you should even see this on the receiver display to know your getting the signal correctly through the HDMI cable from your PS3. Keep in mind, the PS3 is doing all the HD decoding whether is be True HD or DTS Master HD, and therefore you will never see that light up on the receiver display. If the PS3 were capible of bitstreaming HD audio, that is where your receiver would do the work of decoding the HD audio source. As far as listening to say a 5.1 HD audio from a blu-ray, and also using the other two speakers within a 7.1 setup, I can't fully answer that as I don't have that setup. There are some threads I've read about people with a 7.1 setup and what they use, so you might want to dig into that abit more. Hopefully this all kind of makes sense. Did you run calibration yet?
