TV automatically cropping some 4:3 material?

My parent's Toshiba LCD TV (2014 model) struggles with a few random 4:3 DVDs output through my Sony blu-ray player (Tales from the Cryptkeeper for example) and automatically outputs them cropped to 16:9, with no way I can see of restoring the cropped footage. I've fooled around with the various pictures settings to no avail. The Blu-ray player's output resolution is set to 'Auto'.

Any advice?

If the TV is outputting a 4:3 image to widescreen, the image is being expanded, not cropped. What's the picture settings on the TV? The resolution wouldn't have anything to do with the original aspect ratio.

It's cropped, not stretched.

You would need to make sure your TV's aspect ratio is set to Original or 4:3 and that your Sony player is set to:

Home>Setup>Screen Settings>Screen Format>Full/Normal

Make sure Normal is set.

The only other is issue is that they're incorrectly flagged or they're cropped on the disc and the information is unrecoverable.
