Default Sony STR-GD820 surround sound query

Hello all, bit of help/advice please,

I'm a new owner of a Sony STR-DG820 and have 7.1 speakers connected up to it and currently using my PS3 (set to LPCM) for my BD player. I understand that i have to have my amp set to 'AFD AUTO' to get the proper HD audio tracks. I'm a little unsure of the 'MATRIX' capabilities so have this question. If i set the sound on my amp to 'E SURROUND' i can get audio from my back surround speakers. Am i still getting HD sound from 5.1 and just matrixing to the back speakers or am i losing the HD audio track because of the 'E SURROUND' setting. I hope I'm making sense - any help very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

I take it my MATRIXING you mean using the Digital Cinema Processing (DSP) and using something like Studio Cinema Stage A, B or C? If that is what you are refering too, then yes you are still getting Lossless audio.

My amp would be similar to your in that respects, ont he E surround, I think I have it to Dolby Prologic IIx or Neo 6 Cinema, cause I have 6 speakers, personally the safe bet is just Dolby Prologic IIx. If you need to use CSTEX B (which is what I use for matrixing) then go for it. but you are still getting HD audio. You can also pause the movie and start it back, when you hit play look at the receiver screen and it should scroll and tell you what audio track is playing or press the and hold the display button and it will cycle through all the info of you receiver and tell you what audio is playing, what source you are using, ETC.
