I'm finding that movies that I'm not too fond of I am just picking up the standard bluray of for dirt cheap and not paying extra for the 4k but films I really enjoy(or even find cheap copies of) I am willing to shell out for the 4K version. I was wondering, does anyone else do something similar where you only buy certain titles in 4K and just go BD for others, or does everyone here just buy 4K regardless for that lovely HDR and Atmos(BDs usually get the shaft from Sony and esp Aussie distributers like Roadshow)

I've been burned on a couple 4K UHD purchases that ended up turning out to be sh** movies. But other times, I took a leap (like when I blindly bought Overlord) and ended up loving the movie I bought.
It's hit or miss. |

There are certain movies where I watched them once on blu, didnt think much of it, but if a 4k version comes out, newly scanned, all that stuff, and it's a movie that people still praise, I'll give it another shot and buy the 4k, even tough I was fine watching it once on blu.
Case and point, this last few weeks: Scarface, and American Gangster. |

As the movies eventually show up on Netflix and Prime, I try to restrict my disc purchases unless a) the title interest me, and b) the transfer is quality. As for BD, of late, I have bought from Criterion, which can be more expensive than many of the 4K UHDs.

Always buy UHD if available. If not, but it's in 4K/HDR on iTunes, then I'll "buy" it digital (I know, I know

4K UHD first and foremost.
Blu-ray comes second. ...and unless it's free, digital can suck it. |

If I’m going to buy a movie why would I buy it on a format that isn’t UHD? To save the price of a coffee?

It's always a risk when you blind buy movies that you've never seen before, especially when you're paying $19.00 or more for them. You don't know if you're going to like it or not, so to eliminate this problem is to stop buying movies that you never seen. A person doesn't buy a new or a used car without test driving it and inspection.

The opposite is true. The movies suck less for me being in the best PQ meaning it's offering a more immersive experience or giving me eye candy or w/e. Now if it's a panned movie, and offers no format benefits from HDR and WCG? Then it ain't getting bought on 4K UHD... but it certainly isn't getting bought on no 1080p SDR, either!

For me, while I do like blind buying 4K Blu-rays, there are at times where if I'm curious about a certain title, I'd give it a rent through Redbox first to see if I'll like it enough to wanna own it on 4K.
In high regards though, I try not to buy too many movies that I never liked in the first place. |

I don't buy a lot of 4K blurays, it has to be a movie I really want to see restored or just one of my favorite films. For the longest time I was waiting for "Upgrade" to be released in 4K but it looks like that's never going to happen. The bluray was pretty much barebones and the film deserves better. So I'll pick up the limited edition from Second Sight Films. I will support the small companies out there dipping their toes in the freezing waters of the 4K market (Synapse Films and Vinegar Syndrome hopefully Arrow will follow).

Great PQ doesn't make a shite movie any better, but if it's something that I like regardless, or I haven't seen but want to see (being one of those oddbods who likes to make up their own mind), then it's getting bought in 4K if it's available as such. Not always at full price, I'm learning that lesson with catalogue stuff, but it'll end up getting bought eventually.

So you deliberately buy shitty movies just because they're in 4K. If you got money like that to throw away, give it to me. I'll put it to good use.

I like bad movies.
of course, every new format gives you the option to not repeat buying movies you had remorse after buying the first time. So, eventually the collection could get "better". But,... I remember finding 2012 for under $0.50 and decided why not.... It wasn't a good movie at all but it was fun to watch. Also, I pretty much hated Once Upon a Time in Mexico when I rented it but it was another one I found for under a dollar (when places like Hollywood video were closing) and decided I would buy it so that I wouldn't forget how bad it was and eventually want to look for it again. If I re-watched it ... who knows? Maybe I would end up liking it ... ? Last edited by bhampton; 11-09-2019 at 01:44 PM. |

One thing I have always done whenever a new format hits, is setting my standards lower. I'm always very enthusiastic and eager to watch something with the latest tech, so there's always a period of time during which I will buy movies I normally wouldn't.
![]() So for UHD it was titles like The Fifth Wave, the Divergent trilogy, Life Of Pi and Magnificent Seven for example. |

Men in Black: International in 4K seems appropriate for this thread.
