Mackenzie Davis Joins Kristen Stewart in Romantic Comedy ‘Happiest Season’

Mackenzie Davis is in negotiations to play the lead opposite Kristen Stewart in TriStar’s romantic comedy “Happiest Season.”

The studio bought worldwide rights last to the holiday-themed “Happiest Season” from the writing team of Clea DuVall and Mary Holland. DuVall, who directed the 2016 indie “The Intervention,” is also on board to direct in what will be her directorial debut on a major studio feature. Marty Bowen and Isaac Klausner will produce with Jaclyn Huntling overseeing for Temple Hill.

“Happiest Season” centers on a young woman whose plan to propose to her girlfriend while at her family’s annual holiday party is upended when she discovers her partner has not yet come out to her conservative parents. Sony had no comment on Davis’s casting. Variety reported exclusively that Stewart had come on to the project last year.

Davis starred as the night nanny and title character in last year’s “Tully” opposite Charlize Theron. She was one of the leads in AMC’s series “Halt and Catch Fire,” and appeared in “The Martian” and “Blade Runner 2049.” She’s starring as a soldier-assassin in Tim Miller’s upcoming Terminator reboot, joining Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Sony has not yet dated “Happiest Season.” Davis is repped by UTA and Sloane Offer. The news was first reported by the Hollywood Reporter

Yup, this is gonna be a future Christmas classic for me. Based off the trailer alone, I’m gonna love it.

It's funny that Dan Levy and Kristen Stewart are working together now. Maybe it was me misreading the tone, but I distinctly remember a decade ago Levy and someone else interviewed Stewart on a TV show and after the interview Levy made a snide remark about Stewart's awkwardness

Stewart isn't someone who'd hold a grudge or even remember, but I remember being put off by Levy's attitude back then

But, with age can bring wisdom and acceptance.

This looks wonderful. I wish it could have been released a different year under normal circumstances in wide release. Would be so exciting to get a nice gay Christmas movie in theaters for the holidays.

Soundtrack is out now too but I'm waiting until there's snow to listen to it. Not in the mood for Christmas music yet.

This was decent. Predictable but short enough not to be boring, and genuinely funny at times. Just wish there was more Dan Levy in it.

Absolutely loved this as well. This could have been serious and drab and depressing drama but instead it was a hilarious, heartwarming, and feel-good family Christmas movie that also happened to be a coming out story. Kristen Stewart was the heart of the movie and Aubrey Plaza and the middle sister played by Mary Holland also stole the show. One of my faves from this year for sure. Also hope it gets a physical release somewhere down the line.

I was trying to watch this last night, but blacked out half way through. I really enjoyed so far from what I've seen, though. Going to try and rewatch it later on tonight.
