So thinking about getting a xbox one X as a repalcement for my old samsung 4k player that just recently started having trouble reading 4k discs they would start playing all slow with no audio randomly. I also had a blu ray player go in about the same amount of time the 4k player went. So im considering getting a xbox one x as I seen someone on here say their player never went. Or is there a better player I should get if getting a xbox one x for a 4k player has issues or a downgrade?

I had an XBone for a 4K player for a couple of months and sold it... never really liked it as a blu Ray player from a user experience perspective and didn’t own a single XBone game... sold it and replaced it with a cheap Lg player which did me just fine for a while. Recently purchased a Panasonic player though as I’ve upgraded my display. What do you have invested in your display? Spending a bunch of money in a player when you have an inexpensive display doesn’t make a lot of sense to me so I’d consider that... and then do you game at all? If you don’t id go stand alone personally, the additional overhead the gaming UI puts on things and having to use a controller to operate the player I just found to be awkward.

If you game get the xbox one s... just seems logical and I betcha there will be some good deals on one come Black Friday... I personally don't think you're going to see a difference in picture quality in the $200 range of 4K player's on your display. My pansonic player hasn't arrived yet... I am currently without a 4K player as I gave my old one away but I have high expectations from it

![]() The only optical players that ever died on me was a Xbox 360 "RROD", PS3 a similar death and a DVD recorder. Oh an an optical computer drive which started spouting gibberish. My bog-standard CD/DVD/Blu-ray players have always been retired before they died. |

I bougt both an S and X on launch day or the week of. I'm a truck driver might have been working on true launch day. Got an S at a store like wal mart and X Scorpio from Amazon. They play everything.
Anyway the only downside is they don't play Dolby Vision on discs just HDR 10 which is amazing compared to dvd and standard blu rays... If that means anything to you, but Netflix does streams in Dolby Vision on it. So the apps can stream dolby vision but the discs won't at least at this time and probably forever. Might be prudent to go with a mid/high range Sony/Panasonic player to get Dolby Vision working for the few discs that have it? If that matters to you. In 3 years it might if you ask me, but for now and the price especially black friday deals on an X and gamepass ultimate it's worth your money if you ask me. It will make for a fun and exciting wait until PS5 next Christmas same with another New XBOX right? They might do DV and hrd+10 by then...hmmm decisions decisions my Man. ![]() Then u have hdr10+. Only way to get DV hdr10+ from discs is that panasonic 820 and thats still 500 or more. Could be worth it. I dont have one so cant comment there. What I can say is they are all variety's of HDR. You will have decide how many variety's of HDR you need ok? Last edited by KubrickKurasawa; 11-21-2019 at 08:52 PM. |

Yeah. That and the higher end Sony’s are probably the only real choice left since a lot of the other good ones are no longer produced. The older Panasonic’s in particular fared very well next to the premium competition like the Oppo 203.

I own a few 4K players, beginning with the XB1S, the first Sony X800, the LG UBK90, and the Panasonic 820.
If you are a gamer, the XB1X will be available at a very good price on BF, and is a very reliable bit of kit that should last/receive updates for at least four or five years. It's also the best streamer of the bunch, although I use an Apple TV for streaming. The UI is not super friendly for UHD, but it is the most modern, and the MS media remote or a third party option will provide easy access to the basic playback options. The 820 is the best all-around player under $500, would be my advice for a UHD player, and worth the premium for reliability, image quality and granular control for playback options. If you need/want to finesse the image, the 820 will provide the tools, especially for HDR if you own an LCD/projector. The only two aspects of the player that I'm not particularly fond of is the lack of auto source resolution direct, which the Sony does offer, and the remote, which is unlighted and suffers from a very poor UI, e.g., the position of the Netflix button. That said, if you are just looking for a cheap UHD player, you may be able to pick up either the LG or the Sony for $100. The LG has been more reliable than the Sony, which I gave away, and also features auto DV, so that would be my pick. |

But the on / off DV implementation of Sony UHD players is a travesty. Sorry.

I know its not the way the filmmakers intended and blah blah blah, but I really don't care personally, and honestly think it looks great on everything I've played back, including regular blurays. Turning it off, I've noticed no notable difference with movies that are just HDR10. I'll gladly take it over paying over $400 for a player that MIGHT have a little better PQ and better build quality, but that's just me and those things aren't important to me. It looks good and sits on a shelf. |
