The Christian movie called Overcomer is being released on the standard 1080P Blu-ray format on December 17th 2019 (no 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray is planned). I have not seen this low budget movie, however it was a box office success with a $5 million dollar budget and box office sales of over $37.9 million dollars.

Overcomer on Blu-ray (brief user review)

The movie called Overcomer is a fictional Christian movie with a very realistic storyline (rated PG for the entire family). This is another very popular Christian movie from the Kendrick Brothers. Overcomer had a low budget of only $5 million dollars and was a box office success by bringing in $37.9 million dollars. While the core target audience for movies like Overcomer is the Christian community, this movie was also popular with some non-Christians. Overcomer has a very strong New Testament Gospel message about Jesus Christ. The movie contains very bold storylines regarding people’s life changing experience of accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

*** The following might be considered minor spoilers for those that have not seen this Christian movie yet. ***

Because of the closure of businesses in a small town, John Harrison a basketball coach at a high school sees a salary decrease and experiences several families moving away which results in the Christian high school where he works no longer having a basketball team. John Harrison now becomes a running coach. However, the only person at the Christian high school that is on the team is Hannah Scott who sometimes experiences asthma attacks in the middle of running a race. However, with the help of Jesus Christ, Hannah’s coach, and Hanna’s father, the young high school student Hanna becomes a very successful runner and ultimately over time the best of the best when competing against other teams. This movie is strongly recommended for both Christians and non-Christians and has a professional polished feel.

Video comments

Overcomer has only been released on standard 1080P Blu-ray disc, and it never received the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc treatment. This Overcomer Blu-ray/DVD combo pack uses 7.22GB of space out of 8.5GB on the dual layer 480i DVD disc. For those families that own 100% Blu-ray players, there is no reason to watch the included 480i DVD disc, and in fact the DVD contains a lot fewer extra features. The 1080P Blu-ray disc contains all the trailers and extras found on the 480i DVD plus Blu-ray exclusive bonus features. The standard 1080P Blu-ray disc uses a total of 41.9GB of space on the 50GB dual layer Blu-ray disc. This Overcomer Blu-ray disc uses the MPEG-4/AVC codec with some scenes having a bit rate around 26Mbps while other scenes peek into the lower 31Mbps+ range. Overall the color quality and resolution detail was excellent. I have no complaints about this standard 1080P Blu-ray disc when it comes to picture quality. However hopefully more Christian 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray titles will be released in the future. In the year 2016 there was two faith based movies released on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format (20th Century Fox Exodus:Gods and Kings and Sony’s Risen). For the last 3 years there has been no more faith based movies receiving the ultimate 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray treatment which is a disappointment. Overcomer contains many subtitle options: English, English SDH, Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, French, Indonesian/Bahasa Indonesia, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai, and Vietnamese.

Audio comments

Overcomer contains an English 5.1 DTS-HD Master audio soundtrack that is bit for bit exactly the same as the studio master. Overall the 5.1 lossless studio master soundtrack sounded excellent with active subwoofer, surround sound, and dialogue coming out of the center speaker along with two left and right speakers having a unique separate mix. When it comes to Christian movies Overcomer has an excellent 5.1 surround sound mix. Perhaps in the future more Christian movies will receive a 11.1 DTS: X or 11.1 Dolby ATMOS mix which requires a bigger budget and is much more challenging for sound engineers. Overcomer also contains a lossy 5.1 Dolby Digital 640kbps soundtrack for the following languages: French, Spanish, and Thai. For the visually impaired this movie has a lossy English Descriptive 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack at 640kbps.

Special features

The main menu and 100% of all the extras uses the MPEG-4/AVC codec with a 1080P resolution. The main menu is in 2.0 LPCM stereo and all the extra features except for the movie previews is in lossy 2.0 Dolby Digital at 192kbps. The movie previews are lossy 5.1 Dolby Digital at 640kbps.
This Overcomer Blu-ray disc is loaded with many extras that I enjoyed. If one includes the audio commentary track there is over 3 hours of special features for this Blu-ray disc. The 119-minute commentary with Director Alex Kendrick and Producer Stephen Kendrick is in lossy English 2.0 Dolby Digital at 192kbps. This commentary track is encoded with Dolby Prologic matrix surround sound. If one owns a surround sound receiver and they bitstream the audio commentary track, then they can hear the commentary track with Dolby Prologic IIx surround sound. This was nice since the dialogue for the commentary comes from the central speaker while enjoying the movie soundtrack in the background with all 7.1 speakers active (rear speakers are mono surround sound since Dolby Prologic is matrix and not native discrete). Overall the commentary track and all the extra features were excellent and a few notches above the quality of most extra features found on many other Christian Blu-ray discs. The extras and commentary track contain a lot of fun facts about things like location shoot at a real Christian high school which received a slight name change for the movie and how a flying drone was used to film some key scenes in the movie. The Deleted Scenes lasts 11 minutes and 41 seconds, Bloopers and Outtakes lasts 2 minutes and 34 seconds, Overcomer In 60 Seconds lasts 1 minute and 11 seconds, The Making Of Overcomer lasts 21 minutes and 32 seconds, The Heart Of Overcomer lasts 5 minutes and 8 seconds, The Power Of Forgiveness lasts 2 minutes exactly, The Theme Of Identity lasts 5 minutes and 35 seconds, The Opening Drone Shot lasts 4 minutes and 33 seconds, Working With The Kendricks lasts 3 minutes and 57 seconds, Editing Overcomer lasts 5 minutes and 20 seconds, The Board Visualizing The Edit lasts 2 minutes and 48 seconds, The Testing Of A Composer: Paul Mills lasts 5 minutes and 32 seconds, Finishing Touches: Color Grading lasts 3 minutes and 12 seconds, Finishing Touches: Sound Design lasts 4 minutes exactly, Don’t Mess With The Editors lasts 2 minutes and 9 seconds, Overcomer “Lip Sync” Music Video Featuring Mandisa lasts 4 minutes and 6 seconds, Enough (Lyric Video) Featuring Koryn Hawthorne lasts 3 minutes and 25 seconds, Resources Video lasts 4 minutes and 33 seconds, there are also many Christian movie previews and one secular family movie preview on this Blu-ray disc.

Conclusion

Overcomer was a successful Christian movie at the box office. While this is a fictional Christian movie it also is a realistic movie when it comes to the storyline. Like other Christian movies from the Kendrick Brothers, Overcomer has a bold New Testament Gospel message. Once one becomes a Christian, the risen savior changes peoples lives as they make the decision to give up their old sinful lifestyles and live their life for the Lord. This dual layer 1080P Blu-ray disc has an excellent picture quality with a nice 5.1 DTS-HD Master audio soundtrack. The over 3 hours of special features was enjoyable to watch and listen to. Overall, I highly recommend this professional polished movie for both Christians and non-Christians.
