It's not so much the physical swapping I'm worried about, but whether all my data can be backed up and transferred (i.e. PS2 internal memory cards) and which hard drive is the best to get (I've always assumed Western Digital)

I can't give an answer on the internal memory, as I don't have a BC system. About the best drive, everybody here will give you their own opinion. My recommendation is find one you are willing to buy at a price and then google it to see if there's been problems with firmware or it just randomly dying in mass numbers. If there are major problems, you should get a bunch of blog hits of people whining about it.

I personally have bought from pretty much every manufacturer and never had a problem with any of them within 10 years. I've got old Seagate drives that are measured in MB that are still working fine, same with Maxtor ones.

Alright thanks for that. I have a good idea of what I want then. Now if only somebody reassured me that the back-up is wholly reliable.

You say that like free repair outside of a one year warranty is normal and expected from any manufacturer.

Isn't that a little unreasonable? Do you expect free repairs for your TV, refrigerator, car, or computer past their warranty periods?

Perhaps it's because of the 360's extended warranty deal that you expect Sony to provide free lifetime repair service? But Microsoft's extended warranty covers RROD only. And only because it is such a chronic failure that it happens too often for their product to be otherwise viable. It doesn't cover any of the other numerous ways a 360 is likely to break.

I don't mean to belittle the plight of anyone who's PS3 has broken. I know you're troubled, and that's not unreasonable. But this thread seems to be trying to form the idea that Sony has serious reliability problems and is providing unreasonably bad service. And that's just isn't true.

I was playing socom, and all of a sudden it turned off. i thought it was the game, but it was the system. second time i turned it on it played fine for about 5 minutes then tirned off again. third time gave me only enough time to get the disc back out.

I ended up just paying for the repairs. $160 w/tax.

what you guys should of done is bought a SONY CARE Warranty. My 40 gig ps3 broke down three months after I got it. The thing stopped reading discs. My repairs were covered under the one year warranty. The nice thing about living in Canada is that we never get refurbished systems. we always get our original system back repaired. As soon as I received my system back I phoned Sony and got a 4 year SONY Care warranty it cost me about 120 dollars CDN. it would probably be about 90 bucks American. Now I am Covered if anything ever happens to my ps3 again. I did the same thing for my 360 I paid for a 3 year warranty it was only 70 dollars CDN

shoulda coulda woulda. ive never in my decades of buying electronics have had issues like with this gen of consoles. im still against buying extended warranties. BUT this gen has tought me to never buy a console now or in the future without an extended warranty. heck, my used gamecube has lasted longer than my ps3, and the 3 xboxes ive had put together.

I agree with about 95% of your post. But the reliability of 60gigs is definitely pretty bad by the 2 year point.

My 40 Gig broke down last week. I think the laser is messed up. I don't know what's with consoles these days.

My 360 had freezing issues but magically fixed itself. PS2 had DRE (disc read error) issues. Now my PS3 has disc read issues too. I think my last reliable system was PS1.

But going back to the old days, NES, SNES, Sega... I never had issues. I never had issues with other electronics before. TVs, stereos, DVD players, receivers, computers.... they all last 5 to over 10 years. But these new systems break down in about a year (well they tend to break down after the warranty).

I find it insulting. That you pay for a system and the quality is below standard. You call the manufacturer for help. All they tell you is send it in for $150. It's like why do I have to be penalize for cheap unreliable products. They should pay me $150 for releasing such an unreliable. Anyway enough of the rant

Well I sympathize for the people who spend hundreds of there hard earned money and to have it break down 2 years later and I agree if you spend any kind of money it should last a long time.

But for any and all young people on this forum (high school or college) there is a saying THINGS AREN'T MADE THE WAY THEY USED TO stuff today is made cheap and mass produced and manufactured in places like China Mexico Taiwan.

Now I'm in no way hating or bashing a company although it may seem like it but with major companies it all comes down to one thing MONEY
and how much they can make one company that stands in mind Microsoft they wanted to get those 360's out as fast as they could and they did and look what happened they were concerned more about the all mighty dollar instead of quality.

Look at the Wii far less failure rate compared to 360 or any of there sytems why cause Nintendo looks at quality first and not how much money they can stuff in there pockets.

I remember as a kid having a Atari it lasted at least 10 yrs it died back in 95.
Had a 27" Zenith tv for at least 15 yrs died in late 90'S tube finally blew but never needed a repair during the time I had it.

So it just goes to show you how things and times have changed.

I would expect free repairs if the problem is a serious problem and is happening to many people. Sony has done this in the past. They fixed the PS2 failure to read disks. Granted they had to be sued first before they did it.

I got a 60 gig PS3 as soon as it came out and it survived my house, it survived shipping it to Iraq via connex or train box car, it survived the whole year long deployment wich was much sandier and dustier than my last deployment, and I just shipped it back to the U.S and ill be fallowing along with it very shortly. I am very pleased with my PS3 if it does go out I may give it a proper burial as I am very satisfied with the work it has put in for me! My 360 only lasted 6 months out here so I got an elite and it started acting up as well!

Sony can't give us 8-10 years of reliable service (wheres the $$$ in that...?)like they used too...:-( I have the 3 60gig PS3's I use, & I hope it's not just a matter of time as in the next 6-8 months type deal. They should be prob free for 10 years , or as long as I have it

I think you're way of looking at the problem is flawed. The Wii for example is nothing more than a N64 on steroids for the most part. Nothing in there to really get that hot since it is a pretty slow syste. Being mass produced has nothing to do with it. Neither does the explaination of being made in China or some other third world nation. Many very nice products come from those countries and they don't break. I will agree that many companies use planned obsolescence and belive that is a rather crappy business practice.

Replace Socom with Little Big Planet and this exact thing has just happened to me.

I tried resetting the system by turning off the main power switch in back and then turning it back on while holding down the front power button, but this only results in the three beeps and a flashing red power light. Is there another way to reset the unit, or is there anything else I could reasonably try before calling Sony? This is a 60gb model if that makes a difference.

If I have to call Sony, the person on the other end of the phone will not have a pleasant day and I would like to avoid making someone else unhappy unless it is absolutely necessary. I am irate because I've had this unit for just over a year and it is a refurb that I received after shelling out $160 to Sony for replacing my first PS3 which died 2 weeks out of warranty.

its been well documented that 60gb ps3s fail the most out of all of the skus. they are the most unreliable. obviously not all will fail during the same time period, but they have a higher chance of failing. mine lasted for 2 years and 1 month before it died. everyone else in my socom clan that had a 60 gb ps3 had to get theirs replaced at least once.
