I just got the UK version of The Fountain and noticed it lists the running time at 92 minutes as opposed to the 96 minutes for the US release. Anyone know what the difference in content is between the two versions?

Might be just PAL/NTSC speed difference, not certain.

For example, I owned X3: The Last Stand from the UK on DVD (imported it for the extras) and owned the USA DVD. From the start of the film to the beginning of the end credits, the USA DVD was 1 hour, 37 minutes. The UK DVD (using the same parameters) was 1 hour, 34 minutes. Nothing about the feature film on the 2 DVDs were different...just different systems I believe. |

Lacking any other evidence of the UK BD being a different cut of the movie, I went ahead and opened it up (I was hesitant to unseal it before in case I wanted to return or resell it). The running time is actually over 96 minutes (my player counted to 96:55), so it should be the same cut of the movie as the US release. My guess is that the BBFC based their running time information on the PAL DVD. Fox probably copy pasted the run time from their region 2 DVD release rather than stating the correct time for the BD release. So the upshot is that if anyone else is looking to import the region B release for its sweet, sweet lossless audio, they should do so and not be worried about the run time listed on the back cover. |

I noticed on caps-a-holic that the US release seems to be open-matted to 1.78:1. The UK and German releases are 1.85:1. Quite interesting.

A 2-disc Criterion edition would be incredible. Disc 1: Theatrical Cut Disc 2: Redux "December 10, 2008 We spoke briefly with Aronofsky today in Beverly Hills and had to ask him about the rumor from MTV that said he was re-cutting The Fountain, which is my very favorite Aronofsky movie to date. "I'm not re-cutting it, I'm doing a bit of -- I'd call it more of a redux -- well, I don't even know what that word means for goodness sake," Aronofsky said. So what exactly is he doing if not necessarily a director's cut? "It's something more for fans. I worked on the film for 6 years and it went through a lot of versions. And there was one version that was much closer to one of the scripts that we had. And we kind of chose between which way we would go with it and they both are kind of interesting. So I was always curious for myself to see what that alternative version would be. And we cut it actually recently, it's done. I would have to get Warner Brothers to support it and get it out there." Unfortunately, since the film fell between the cracks during its original theatrical release in late 2006 (it only made a depressing $10 million at the box office), I imagine that Warner Brothers is very skeptical of ever touching the project again. Aronofsky did say that, "at some point, hopefully, there'll be enough of a demand that they'll let me go in and do it. But we got to get there." And if you're still a bit confused by this alternate version, you're not alone, as I am, too. And to make it all a bit worse, Aronofsky added this: "It's very similar but it's looking at a few things in a few different ways and answers a few questions for people and raises some new questions in other ways." In the MTV article, he did mention that it would contain "unused footage from the first go-round" and be a "complicated project on a couple of levels." Been thinking about The Fountain a lot lately. I'd really love a special edition bluray, from Criterion or otherwise. (I am partial to Criterion, though.)
