I went again to see it in IMAX. Would bump it to a straight 5 after my second viewing. Wonderful film. Apparently it's only getting a limited cinema release in US/Canada at the beginning of December, but I recommend seeing it on the big screen if possible. If not then apparently it'll be on Amazon Prime as of 20th Dec.

Saw this tonight, the flashback sequences are the less interesting parts of the movie, but it’s quite a lot of fun otherwise. Since the ballon sequences are the real highlight, not sure if it will play as well on Prime. Too bad about such a limited release and no premium formats near here, as you could tell the sequences designed with IMAX in mind.
Was a Q+A after (no previews, I’m guessing because it was a special screening) with the director and producer and they talked about a lot of it was done practically with the actors thousands of feet in the air in a vintage ballon and a stunt woman doing a rope climb on the side of the ballon in flight. And there even was a problem that they had one crash landing after the filming had ended for the day and the actors were dragged 50 feet with Felicity Jones hurting her head. Everyone was fine of course, but sounds like they actually had to use more VFX afterwards with the actors in a ballon on stage and match it to footage of the skies they did film. |

I saw this in theaters before it left and it was a frustrating experience for me. This is a good movie that should've been great. Sometimes convention is a filmmaker's best friend and this movie is a perfect example of that. The structure was simple, bookend the film with the two launches with Act II uniting everybody. From the moment she tosses the dog out we should never leave that balloon. 3/5 on the strength of the visuals and the physicality of Jones's performance otherwise.

That partly makes me wish I had waited for that instead of setting in theater. I’ll probably try and take a quick look at the expanded scenes this weekend and if they are what I expected based on scope framing which look cramped at certain moments

Lovely cinematography in this. I also thought it was simple, yet effective in the running time and in telling a nice little story.
Felicity Jones really surprised me towards the opening of the film with that exuberant charm she brought, she's normally not like that in her roles. |
