Japan Dirty Pair Blu-ray Box

I am a big fan of Dirty Pair, and I am curious about the new Blu-ray set that dropped, but with a $500+ price tag, I am not able to get a copy.

Did anyone here order it? If so, did anyone receive it already and could give me some insight as to what it is like? Like, how's the remaster, the sound, etc. in comparison with the 2006 DVD set that left a lot to be desired?

Thank you.

Am I to believe this is a JP (Japan) Blu Ray? It would explain the price tag. Japan has alot of anime Blu rays that has never left the country (like 3x3 Eyes Blu Ray and Ah My Goddess S1 & S2 Blu Ray) but I'd never dump $500 on a Collector's Edition unless it was numbered, one of a kind, and made with ultra premium materials with outrageous extras inside.

But to answer your question; no I didn't order it. Wasn't aware it existed until I saw your post

Well, I did apply the Japanese flag to the title for a reason. XP

I'm totally with you on that. Just want the footage so bad at the same time. T_T

I'd dip on this if it has English subs... but I'm guessing it doesn't.

No, sadly, but it's a Japanese release so why would it?

With YouTube's compression, nothing on there is representative.

I would wait a while to see if Nozomi or another company will be releasing this in North America. On a recent podcast, Shawne Kleckner of RightStuf/Nozomi was asked about this, and he didn’t rule out the possibility.

It can be painful to drop hundreds of dollars on an import only for an English-friendly release to come out and retail for a small fraction of that cost. It’s happened to me plenty of times, so I try to avoid the double dip now.

I would guess that if RS still have the rights to it they could do a Kickstarter for it.

I had pre-ordered it immediately, but after seeing the thread linked to above, I decided to cancel my pre-order; I may re-order it if screencaps look better, but the Youtube trailer was concerning.

Some Japanese releases have English subs. Yes, normally it doesn't have English subs or even their own, but it's worth checking just to be sure.

There are example's of Q-tec's DNR work on multiple titles on display on Youtube. It still shows up despite compression. It's pretty telling when it's visible on Youtube.

Dragon Ball Kai which was remastered by Q-TEC and it's one of their most famous (or dare I say, infamous), it looks very blurry though the detail was preserved so it wasn't actually ruined.

Here's a screenshot (2 ARs) of Q-TEC's Dragon Ball Kai work:

4:3 Edition

16:9 Edition

Back during this past summer, I bought the OVA collection while RightStuf was having a sale. (The other sets were sold out at the time) A couple days later before it even arrived, this blu-ray set was announced. So while I greatly enjoyed most of what was included in the OVA set (I loved the Halloween episode where they're chasing that robot around), I held off on buying anything else in case of the off chance that we eventually get them over here. I'm assuming that's at least a possibility if the dvds are still in print. The video above looks like a good improvement over the dvd in my eyes.

Well to find out, somebody has to get their hands on the set. I suggest you order it anyway so we can all at least get screenshots. XP

I have no way of capturing screenshots, so unfortunately it wouldn't help anyone else if I did buy it.

It's Q-Tec- if you're actually expecting it to look good, you'll be disappointed. It's DNR'd to death, simply put.

"Most infamous"? That's tame compared to what they normally do. A Dragon Ball example does not work for everything.

BD vs DVD comparison

And this is how I intend to re-encode and watch this with a nice field of grain.

Not perfect, but restores a bit of the filmic look back in which makes it a bit more pleasant to my eyes.

Forgot to go eat lunch, so I'll take some more screenshots when I get back in a bit from the OVAs and movies.

A shame about the grain, but the DVDs are so bad anything is an improvement.

This is where the BDs really start to shine. There's now a fine bit of grain (could have been degrained but it's not distracting like the TV show), and you can definitely tell a big difference due to the color correction and better contrast vs the old DVDs.

Flash screenshots:

BD 1 | DVD 1
BD 2 | DVD 2

I'll post some screenshots from the movies later tonight. I thought I bought the Project EDEN R2DVD, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. So, the only source I have to compare that against is the old ADV release. Though Project EDEN also looks to be the widescreen version in this release.
