The surprisingly poor ratings - it got off to a weak start and lost over a fifth of its viewers by episode two - will probably mean it's a one-off unless it really takes off on catchup and Netflix.

Damn it. The twist at the end of ep 2 has really ruined it for me.
The third episode is like an entirely different show. Last edited by Michael11; 01-04-2020 at 02:58 AM. |

Well this is certainly going to be divisive among fans of Bram Stoker's immortal Count, but I quite liked it. Claes Bang's Dracula is as quick with a quip as he is with a bite, and the mordant humor that runs through this series was often very clever. Dolly Wells' Sister Agatha makes for a worthy adversary...and she's just as skilled with a witty observation and retort as Dracula is. As caustically funny as much of this is, it by no means lessens the creepy effectiveness of the horror aspect - a tough line to straddle, but this show manages nicely.
There are many surprises along the way for those of us well-acquainted with Stoker's tale and its numerous versions. The first episode is cozily gothic, yet these iconic characters have certainly been infused with fresh blood. Episode 2 features one of the more interesting voyages aboard the Demeter and I found the final episode to be quite the bold departure - though it may well be a leap that's too much for many - leading to what I found to be a most satisfying conclusion. This may not be your dad's Dracula - and I suspect there are going to be more than a few that detest it - but I found this take on the King of the Undead to be sharply funny, horrific, surprising and never less than entertaining. |

I enjoyed it, Claes Bang was excellent and it was nicely atmospheric. I think the failure is one of marketing, it would have worked better if made as three distinctly separate films, rather than shown like a three episode series. As for it not being exactly like the book, so what? Dracula's been around so long you can do pretty much anything with him, just keep it entertaining. Eventually one of the streaming channels will spot the enormous potential of Kim Newman's brilliant Anno Dracula books

Well, the way Sherlock disappeared up its own rectum for many people by its last season pretty much marked that reaction as the most likely trajectory, but this time they seem to have achieved that level of audience alienation in three episodes rather than four seasons.

Watched the first episode. About as scary as a hamster, and I've been terrified by vampires since I watched Salem's Lot on an old portable black and white TV in my bedroom when I was eight years old. Reminded me of a typical Dr. Who episode more than a take on Dracula. Maybe vampires are just played out for me...or maybe this show is so deconstructive, it's just not scary.
Netflix's Hill House? Yeah...that was creepy as all get out. Last edited by Ernest Rister; 01-05-2020 at 09:39 PM. |

I just watched this and I liked it very much. It was a lot more humorous than I expected, but found it to be a fresh and enjoyable take on the concept. At first, I really didn't think I'd like the actor playing Dracula, but as it went on, I found him to be great in the role. The third episode certainly took a left turn, when I was expecting it to turn right, but I was still interested and entertained by it. I think the series would have probably benefited more if they had continued their own retelling of the classic novel for the third episode, and then gave it another season where they placed it in modern times, instead of mashing both time periods into one season. I would still like to see another season, but not sure if it's possible with the way it ended.
