Default Yamaha Remote - UhOh

Alrighty folks - I was treated to a Yamaha HTR-6160 for Christmas this year via the fiance....

I've been VERY happy with the receiver, and the new speakers I treated myself to , but.... I can't count the number of times that my fiance has dropped/spilled water on/otherwise injured our yamaha's remote.

Tonight - spilled water on it... and bam. it's done. It won't seem to work, changed the batteries, nothing, let it dry out really well, nothing. For all purposes, it appears to be.... dead

The remote's model # is RAV285/WN05830 US .

Now, I've got a couple questions here...

Does anybody know where I can find a replacement remote/would Yamaha sell them?

OR

Is this my opportunity to find a universal? Anybody have any opinions/recomendations? I was under the impression, that you required a WORKING remote in order to properly program a universal remote. Can anyone confirm?

Thanks very much.

33.95.

Or you could put the money toward a Harmony. There is a very rare occasion that I whip out my OEM Pioneer remote for my receiver, but that's usually for more advanced stuff that I'm following the manual for, so it's just easier that way. I use a Harmony 550 99% of the time though, I like it. A lot of people seem to like the Harmony One, but IMO it looks like a toy. But, with Harmonys you don't have to program them like a regular universal. It comes with software, you plug the remote into your computer, tell it what devices you have, and it sets everything up for you. You can customize the button functions if you want, but for most things it requires absolutely no work.

Depending on the date the receiver was purchsed, Yamaha will typically give you 90 days of warranty coverage on accesories, including remote control. If it really is water damage, it's most likely shorted something out, which is virtually impossible to attribute to water damage in a definitive way. So, you could always try to contact their service number and file a claim as soon as you can to try to get a free replacement? Hopefully that works for you!

After replacing your remote, you might want to invest in one of these for girlfriend as well.

Actually, I've already bought a pair of sippy cups for my fiance ... for camping purposes - she won't spill any booze again

maybe I should break them out for couch use too though, good though.

Haven't contacted yamaha yet - but I'm definitly considering it... I'd also like a Harmony (especially since I won't need to use the remote to program it), but the budget just isn't there right now.

Anybody want to contribute to the newly formed, "Brendon needs a new Harmony One" fund?

I've had to replace a Yamaha remote before, and they're readily available through Yamaha. However, I ended up buying one off Ebay, and I got it for around $20 or so.

I use Harmony remotes, but it's always good to have the stock remote on hand as well. Occasionally, you might need it for advanced commands, and it's always good to have if you re-sell your receiver upon upgrading.
