Default Latest ARTIST (any format) you've recently discovered!

I love music and am always interested and happy when I discover an artist I haven't previously heard of or gave a chance to listen to before. I recently, within the last year, heard some stuff by "Duffy" and must say I am very impressed. I'm anxiously awaiting her next album.

Several years ago I came across Jack Johnson and now have all of his stuff on vinyl and CD and also purchased his dual-concert DVD. I can't wait for a BD release and I hope one is in the works.

Who are some of the artists you've personally discovered lately?

John

Great thread, John!

I guess on my list would have to be the Vince Guaraldi Trio and Prokofiev. Miles Davis too, but I need to give Kind of Blue another spin before I form a final opinion on it. I must confess that most of my more recent (last year or two) purchases have been buying newer 180g pressings of stuff I already had, or by artists I already know. But my tastes are slowly expanding!

Thank you Rich! I kinda thought it would be a good idea to start something like this. There are so many of us on here and we all have different tastes in music, so I am also kind of hoping to learn about some new artists from the discoveries/suggestions that I hope will be forthcoming.

I've heard you mention the work of Vince G. before and since I do like jazz a whole lot, this might have to be an artist I should give a listen to. And like you said, it's all about expanding your taste, because there is so much good music out there.

I just discovered the 80s uk pop band "Breathe"

I was in vegas and I heard the song "How can I fall", and had to find out who sang it. I also found out they were the ones who sang another song I liked called "Hands to Heaven"

Definately seek out Vince G's stuff. I've always liked Linus and Lucy, sometimes called the Charlie Brown Theme, by him. I was looking around You Tube a couple of months ago (looking at turntables, I think), when I came across a beautiful piece of music. I can't find it now, but George Winston's take on it is here. A bit of digging told me it was Cast Your Fate to the Wind, by Vince G. I checked on Acoustic Sounds and to my amazement, the LP it was from (Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus) was not only available, but it's one of their 2 x 180g 45 RPM reissues! So I ordered it and Charlie Brown Christmas (which I already had on CD). Brilliant stuff, and I'm glad I tried it out!

BEN HARPER

check him out, lot of great stuff, i would recommend the "live from mars" album

Harper has some good stuff playing with jack johnson also, covering some songs like marleys "high tide or low tide"

EDIT: just found this guy about a month ago, but he is not new, has alot of stuff available

Being a Jack Johnson fan, I am indeed very familiar with Ben Harper's stuff and I'll agree with you wholeheartedly. As a matter of fact, I have him in my wishlist for my next vinyl purchase(s)!

I'm interested in Sigur Ros....what can you tell me about him? Music genre and the like? I saw one of his albums on vinyl and was gonna do a blind-buy, but now that you brought him up, great opportunity to ask someone who knows.

It's very , very mellow. It's truly a unique band as they are very talented with their instruments and use the voice as another instrument. They use this "Icelandic gibberish" as they call it. Basically they use the voice as simply another instrument that goes with the other instruments. I'll include three links to youtube music

Svefn g englar

This is the song that put them on the map for me. I first heard it in the movie Vanilla sky at the end of the movie.

Hoppipolla

Heard this for a planet earth trailer.

Saeglopur

Heard this for the newest title in the Prince of Persia franchise.

I recommend getting their first album Agætis byrjun and Takk if you enjoy those songs. The last two songs are from the takk album.

Also, if you don't know Boards of Canada i would check them out.

dayvan cowboy

Enjoy !!

Thanks for the links silversnake! This stuff is right up my alley! Sigor Ros is DEFINATELY a purchase for me. The "Boards of Canada" track was wonderful as well and I'm going to watch a little more YouTube on them and see what I can pick up.

Great suggestions! Thank you!

My pleasure John. Enjoy. I love introducing people to new music, especially Sigur Ros. I think they are a real hidden gem.

Boards of Canada look up the tracks from Geogaddi. My favorite album

CAT POWER!!! I saw her at Lolapalooza '08 and was completely enchanted by her. Her albums: Greatest, Covers recorsd and CAT POWER(self titled)are one of the best recordings I own. The other band that I just dicovered this Christmas was NEW YORK DOLLS-punk rock as it should be

If CAT POWER cds sound terrific, I can't imagine how much better and more intimate her LPs would sound.

Now there's a blast from the past! Must dig that out again and have a listen!

I've also been getting into Jesse Cook lately. Great acoustic guitar! His album Nomad was recorded in several countries and has lots of different flavours on it.
