There isn't a single horror film in the top 100 highest grossing November openings. It's a terrible time to dump horror movies.

Kyliegh Curran who played Abra was excellent. You can argue whether it was for "PC" reasons or not, but if you read what Flanagan says, they saw over 900 girls, yes 900, clearly not all of them black (or non-white), and Kyliegh Curran was the clear choice after her rehearsal with Ewan.

Watched the DC last night and loved it, some of those shots (Rose the Hat floating in space especially) were gorgeous.

Also, stop having a shitfit about that scene with the kid, it’s horror. There have been countless horrors that feature the death of a child. Horror in general, reflects our fears right back at us. One of those fears for many is losing a child. |

Watched the film a couple nights ago and LOVED it. As for the box office...my wife and I really wanted to see it opening weekend BUT the only theater around here was only showing it in IMAX opening week. We weren't going to pay twice as much, and this isn't the kind of movie you need to see in IMAX. I don't know about other theaters, but at least around here, THAT is why I think it failed. The following weeks I either had to work or we didn't have money to go see a movie... We missed our window. And then it was gone in like a month, when we still wanted to see it.

Seriously. Jeez. We get it, you think kids should be invulnerable in movies cause horror has to be safe.
I thought it was uncomfortable and went on for a long time and was also NOT gratuitous. They never at any point show what's actually being done to him, there's lots of crosscutting to other locations and characters during it because it's such a pivotal event in the movie, there's no gore, and it's the point at which that traveling cadre of freaks is actually made out to be a terrifying threat that you want to see killed. They're just kind of whimsically weird and generically evil before. If that scene wasn't there, the stakes would have felt much lower. It's all about character development, it is also by far the most effective horror scene in the movie, and if you can't handle that but are fine with adults being gorily and graphically chopped up in other movies then I am very confused. Sure, it's worse when kids die in real life than adults. This isn't real life. |

Watched my Blu-ray copy over the weekend. Sorry to deviate from the majority of opinions but this film did absolutely nothing for me. Don't want to get into a heated debate on the reasons why I didn't like it, but I will say that I spent 3 hours watching a film where I couldn't care less about any the characters or their plight. It just didn't work for me. Sorry if anyone is offended by this.

I thought it was alright. I think it had too much ground to cover and its attention was split too much between the main characters for it to really work. It felt too long, but also paradoxically felt like it would have benefited from being a miniseries. It was in a kind of no man's land of containing too much plot but not enough character development. I didn't really care that much about either main "good" character cause stuff was just breezed by too fast. And some of the dialogue was quite bad (probably straight from the novel, Stephen King is infamous for bad dialogue).
I haven't read the book, but I was just reading about changes from it, and it sounds like most of them were for the better! |

I caught the theatrical cut this evening. I liked it overall, and was engaged by the changes from the book (which I thought was alright, but also plagued with the usual King clunker of an ending). The only downside of the film was that it did start feeling more rushed once the gears were in motion, with certain characters and situations moving along a little too easily given the stakes in front of them. Maybe the Director's Cut will fix some of this, maybe not. I recommend the film either way.
I was kinda bummed that we didn't get to see Rose's [Show spoiler] . ![]() |

Kinda surprised to not see any Blu-ray copies around at Walmart and Target over the last week. Wasn't looking to buy it anyway (waiting for UHD to go on sale), but just speaking anecdotally, it looks like A) this sold well and B) the decision to make the DC BD-only means people seem to have chosen that format over UHD.

Holly Gibney is the best part of The Outsider so far and it's a pretty great series. Cynthia Erivo is killing it in the role. I haven't read Mr. Mercedes but I've read The Outsider, I don't give a shit about her skin color, all I care about is the performance given and so far she's the best the show has to offer.

Got to go in-depth on the differences between the Director's and Theatrical cuts. On the whole, Doctor Sleep feels like a richer, more developed experience that's more deliberately paced. It immediately jumped in my rankings to Mike Flanagan's best film.
