A new Spirited Away listing also popped up with a release date of 5/19 but it doesn't specifically say it is a Steelbook. That's why I'm not making a thread for it yet.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084FJBSYC

Thanks to SpazeBlue for pointing this out in the GKIDS thread.

Does anyone know if GKIDS is planning to release steelbooks for all of the Studio Ghibli movies?

I don't understand the point of these steelbooks (this and Ponyo) that GKIDS will be releasing a month from now, unless it's just a cash grab, which is what it looks like. The steelbooks seem to be the exact same in content as the DVD/Blu-ray combo that were released less than 3 years ago. What a waste. At least the collector's edition include the CD soundtrack and 40-page book.

While I don’t necessarily disagree with the sentiment, I’d say it most definitely serves as a perfect way to drum up new sales from Steelbook collectors and others who have been on the fence about purchasing the prior release. A lot of these companies have to find creative ways to continue selling their products and Steelbooks have a proven track record. Plus, the US can finally get their own line of Steelbooks for those who didn’t want to import other countries’ releases.

Let’s see...
1) newly acquired license so a new steelbook, first for the US, tends to make money to pay for said license.
2) new fans are born every day
3) diehard old fans might like this
4) can potentially be used in cross promotion of other products

I own the Ghibli collection several times over, from all over the world and will definitely be getting these steelbooks.
So, in your opinion a waste, not in my opinion.

GKIDS could've easily released Ponyo and Howl's Moving Castle as collector's editions like they've done with Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, and Princess Mononoke, but for some reason chose not to. At least those have more to offer. These steelbooks, on the other hand, seem to be no different in content from what GKIDS put out in 2017, which wasn't that long ago. I would've gladly bought a collector's edition of The Tale of the Princess Kaguya since I don't even own a physical copy of that movie, but unfortunately GKIDS seems to have discontinued that line of releases. I'm frustrated by their inconsistency.

I prefer the collector's edition releases. The soundtrack is a nice touch and a booklet is always cool to have. These Steelbooks are downright ugly.

You came to the Howl's Moving Castle steelbook thread, and commented. So you obviously care more than you admit.

These releases get a bunch of new people (and existing owners) to jump on purchasing the new steelbooks.

You must be new to home media.
First rule of home media: the only thing studios are consistent at is being inconsistent.

Also what’s to say these don’t get CEs like the others? Clearly rereleasing Ghibli works.

No, I just don't care for consumerism. Germany and Japan both released the entire Ghibli catalog on Blu-ray in the uniform silhouette digipaks. Just because it's a norm for most American companies to be greedy and indifferent to the environment doesn't mean their actions need to be rationalized with these so-called "rules".

By the looks of it, I think it's safe to say that GKIDS has ditched the collector's edition series since they're now moving onto steelbooks, which add nothing more to what's already available. They're even going to re-release Spirited Away for the 2nd time in 6 months because apparently GKIDS thinks we're all just bottomless money pits.

Oh well, can’t win ‘em all.
I will be looking forward to adding these to my Ghibli collection.

You don’t want it don’t buy it. Nothing wrong with having options out there. Welcome to movie collecting.
