yes

it's an outstanding disc

you can trust the quality of the test patterns

my recommendation(s) is to try again after reviewing the tutorials

Its a professionally made product and seems they know what theyre talking about but the specific issue for me with the color is that when I adjust the settings to match what its apparently supposed to be, the actors look sunburnt. and yes I used the physical color filter thing and held it up

hard to troubleshoot anything over the internet of course but essentially if I get to the test screen with a white background and two rows of colored boxes jutting from the right and left, it is my understanding that if I look at it through the red filter, I should only see two black boxes and the other boxes should all be red, like the background. but if I adjust my TV so that that is the case, the actors look too red

You're supposed to adjust the Blue Filter first and then make adjustments to the other colors. I believe the disc included instructions in the case with the filters did it not? If not, then perhaps the onscreen menu's instruct you to start with the Blue filter. You've going to need to adjust not just the 3 point filters but also the 10+ point filters as well if you're going to go all out with the disc. It's also important to keep in mind that what you are doing isn't a professional calibration so even if you follow the directions carefully your success may still be hampered by the set you own. The cheaper the tv the more likely it is that you aren't going to get all that great results. Cheap set's aren't going to be able to be calibrated correctly even by a professional using professional tools... they can just make it look better. More top of the line sets often come out of the box already calibrated fairly closely so in those cases this disc may allow you to come close, but again, a professional calibration is still going to be required.

My advice... Set sharpness to 0, turn off all processing functions in your set. Turn the display to cinema mode or calibrated mode, set the temperature to Warm or Warm 2, set to gamma to 2.1 or 2.2 and then use the disc to set brightness and contrast correctly. Color saturation is going to take some experimenting but my guess is that it will be set somewhere in the 50's or 60's. After all of that turn on the blue filter option on the disc and set the blue filter correctly. At that point check your picture and see how satisfied you are. If it looks a bit too red or green make small slight adjustments but don't mess with these settings too much as you'll likely end up screwing up the blue filter settings as a result.
