Default Glass door for media closet

For those of you with media closet that have a glass door, any advice on what to look for - and more importantly, what to avoid. One early consideration I had was a black frame storm door. When I looked at the display at Lowes and "tapped" on it, you can easily hear a shake. I can only imagine what a movie with good LFE would do.

My "want" is to have a solid core pine wood door with clear glass center. I would then put a very light smoke tint on the glass.

The big question I have is about reverberation of the glass in a HT. If the door itself shakes I believe I can take care of it with door seal and felt. Advise?

If the frame is a standard size or close you can just buy a ready glazed interior or even exterior door. Doesn't have to be a perfect fit, trim it to size. What will affect sound resonance is material - solid wood or mdf will kill sound more than a plywood on frame door. Glass is normally toughened, can be double glazed and shouldn't resonate if mounted on rubber seals or just fixed with silicone sealant. What will afffect resonance is how well the door is mounted to the frame (good solid hinges, possibly three) and how tightly the catch pulls it into the frame, and a bubble gasket type seal will do the job. Just treat it like weatherproofing an exterior door

If you are worried about reverb and possible reflections (both sonic and visual) there is another option - build a basic wooden frame, stretch non-reflective black material over it and line the result with acoustic material, where it functions as both the door and a bass-trap.

Hell, you could splash out for canvas and have whatever cool design printed on it instead of just black material.

I'm making a unit for my home cinema room (provided it ever gets finished...) and the black material bit is the route I'm going down.

Thanks for the information and ideas!!!!

I've started looking at prehung doors at Lowes. I can tell a difference with some with the thinkness of the glass - interior doors tend to be thinner and I believe they will rattle in a HT. I'll probably go with a prehung exterior door since the appear more "solid" and the glass tends to be thicker.

Of course, more expensive...
