Default Pandora and the Flying Dutchman (1951) (Remastered) - April 21, 2020

Pandora and the Flying Dutchman Blu-ray

https://www.uphe.com/movies/pandora-...lying-dutchman

Quote:
Cohen Media Group is proud to present a new restoration of the timeless romance based on the legend of the Flying Dutchman. At a Costa Brava port in the 1930s, singer Pandora (Ava Gardner) meets the dashing but doomed yachtsman Captain Hendrik van der Zee (James Mason), who falls under the spell, and pushes her to commit an ultimate act of love. This delirious, gorgeous romantic drama (shot by Jack Cardiff) reveals Lewin to be one of mid-century cinema's greatest stylists. Also included in this special edition is Lewin's rarely seen 1957 feature The Living Idol.

Somehow I didn't realize this release would include "The Living Idol" -- very nice.

Nice. Its on two discs and includes the 1957 film The Living Idol. I will be preordering this. I've never seen Pandora and the Flying Dutchmen but I think I will enjoy it from the trailer. A second film as a bonus is even cooler.

Keep expectations low for Living Idol--it's very offbeat but, if I recall correctly, quite beautifully shot.

It also was notoriously hard to see.

Noticed Pandora is playing at the Quad Cinema here in NYC. Might be playing in an art house near you too

I saw it about 7 years ago on TCM and haven't seen it since, but it's always been with me. Will definitely be picking this up.

It's an MGM picture in Scope shot by the great Jack Hildyard (BRIDGE ON RIVER KWAI).

Nice. I see BullMoose mentioned in posts, but never used them. How do they rate?

The price will likely drop on Amazon, but I'm not averse to ordering elsewhere to get this on release. Interested primarily as I'm a big Mason fan and I've not seen it, and I dragged my heels on the Kino and the Region B, which are both OOP.

Very good. They ship items out before release date. Most times I get pre-orders the day before release with them, free shipping at $30 without the sales tax which is the big thing for me, and their packaging blows Amazon out of the water. They generally beat Amazon prices for the most part. I would imagine also, that Eureka will probably be releasing this in Region B as they license a lot from Cohen.

Great. Thanks. I’ll check out their site in more detail.

I've never understood the appeal of this movie. I've tried watching it twice but fell asleep half way through both times. Can someone please enlighten me?

I don't believe in psychic phenomena, but....I must be psychic!! Just now, I finally decided to watch this movie, which has been sitting on my DVR since TCM showed it last August. I noticed the Cohen media logo at the beginning of the film, and that got me wondering if this has been released on Blu-ray yet. A quick search here and, voila, it's just been announced!!

>cue Twilight Zone theme<

I'm not sure how I feel about this film yet, but, damn, it sure looks incredible!

Say what you will about the story -- the film is one of the most beautifully photographed movies ever made.

It's one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen projected. It's the most beautiful non Powell and Pressburger technicolour title.

I'm super happy we are getting Living Idol too. I only wish it had its own box and release. I'm a big Steve Forrest fan.

I didn't pre-order from Bullmoose in the end, and just placed an order on Amazon for Prime Member delivery on...May 14th.

Really looking forward to this, and happy to wait given current events and priorities.

Edit:

Same price at DeepDiscount, so added another title for free shipping. Seems I'm not quite that patient after all...

I watched the film for the first time tonight and, while I'm no expert on these things, I thought it looked pretty great! I do agree with @moviecriticsonline on the yellow tint in the opening scenes, I watched the Restoration Comparison and actually preferred the color on the "unrestored" version for that part of the film (but it's only maybe 5 or so minutes of the entire movie).

As for the film itself, it's a unique watch for sure. A haunting, brooding, somewhat slow film that really forces you to either get on its wavelength or be completely stranded. I loved it.
