Default Bob Iger Steps Down as Disney CEO; Bob Chapek to Succeed

At long last, Bob Iger’s reign at Disney has come to an end. The Walt Disney Company announced today that effective immediately, Iger is stepping down as CEO and assuming the role of executive chairman. Bob Chapek, who most recently served as chairman of Disney parks, experiences and products, will assume the role of CEO, effective immediately.

This is a developing story. More to come.

I vaguely recall reading that Iger's time would come to an end soon, but I didn't expect it to be so sudden. I wonder how much he's thinking "Don't rock the boat," but surely every CEO wants to leave a mark.

Hopefully the new guy is more open to licensing the Disney and Fox libraries instead of sitting on the movies and doing nothing with them.

Wasn’t Kennedy rumored to be gone within the next year anyway, as a result of her “stepping down” aka getting dismissed by Lucasfilm following her contract expiration? At least that’s what Grace Randolph has been reporting for a while.

If it comes to fruition, I wouldn’t necessarily credit the new CEO, as the writing has been on the wall for some time it seems.

I think she'd retire anyway by the end of 2021, being 68 by then.

She was rumored to be gone within the last year too. And in the year before that and in the year before that.

This particular writing on been on the wall for years.

And yet...

Hardly stepping down. He's stepping up as Executive Chairman. CEO reports to him I think.

Makes sense I guess for Iger to step down. He published his memoirs a few months ago and took a victory lap on the chat shows. Though as the head of the company, he's probably liable for an equal share of the blame if you don't like how Kathleen Kennedy has run Star Wars. Rumors say he was responsible for much of the studio interference behind the scenes of Rise of Skywalker.

Dunno about this Disney Parks guy. The direction of Galaxy's Edge is a bit of a mess in my opinion. Not Star Wars-y enough. As a movies first guy, it was weird to visit a park that seemed to be inspired more by Clone Wars and Rebels. But maybe it's improved with Rise of the Resistance.

It's sort of funny. A guy like Bob Iger has had a massive influence over the films that Disney, Marvel, and Lucasfilm have produced over the last 15 years. We'll be watching these movies for decades to come. But his name isn't on a single one of these movies, and most of the public who love them have no idea who he is.
