Default The Jacket

A German version of THE JACKET just released a couple of weeks ago. I'm not sure whether it's region locked or is the same master as the French version I already have.

Wish they’d release it in the UK or US

I'd almost buy it because it has the good cover. If only it weren't in German. Not sure why this ended up one of those movies stuck in distribution hell.

I'd love a 4k Steelbook.

So irritating that a quality movie like this doesn’t get a proper release

Has anyone got any images of the German edition? Is the big blue box on the front removable?

There's the info "Wendecover (reversible cover = without rating logo)" at the right edge of the blue box.

So the Japanese, German and French editions are no proper releases?

Correct. I’d like one from the country of the movies origin without foreign language on it.

One of the stupidest things I've read here in a long time. Instead of being happy there are several discs to chose from, it's the old "it's only good if it's American".

But you're right, foreign languages are evil, dirty and spoil the whole disc. Watch out, you're in the German part of the forum, it might fry your brains.
(BTW, this was a US/GB/German production)

You may be a little biased on the situation. I imagine 90% of the movies you watch are in a foreign language based on where you're from and you're accustomed to that. On the other hand 90% of the movies we watch are in English based on where we are from.

It doesn't really have anything to do with America, for me. I will gladly buy a UK or Australian copy. It just makes it really difficult to navigate the menus, special features and even read the credits when it's all in a language I don't speak. The package is kind of a big portion of owning the movie for some of us.

If I didn't care about the artwork or other features of the disc, I would just buy the disc on ebay in a paper sleeve or just get the Digital copy. Unfortunately my wallet suffers and my want list is high, because I'm not that guy.

I can't remember if I saw The Jacket or not, I might have I was on a pretty big Kiera Knightly kick back in the day.

What a hilarious response. Thanks for that.

Before you explode with more undue rage and accusations of xenophobia my reasoning is very simple. I want to be able to read what’s on my item. Why would I want to have something I don’t understand. I don’t speak German so I wouldn’t buy a book in German. Same principle applies. If I watch a German TV show, I’ll need subtitles because I don’t understand German. It’s just that simple.

I’ve bought lots on overseas discs where the non English is at a minimum. I’m not American by the way. Otherwise, I’ll wait.

No danger of exploding here.

Thing is, your reasoning above makes much more sense than just calling the 3 available releases "improper" because "I’d like one from the country of the movies origin without foreign language on it."

With German books and TV shows you are right of course, but it's not like, in this case, the movie would be in German - it just has that as an additional sound option available. Also, there are no forced subs, so I didn't see a problem there. Myself, I don't really care where my disc is from - as long as it has the original language option, the language on the cover or menu is totally irrelevant to me.
(BTW, discs released by one Swiss publisher/label can sometimes come with covers in different languages - German, Italian or French, depending on which part of the country you buy them from. And almost every item in supermarkets and shops has all product info in those 3 languages as well...)

As for the sarcastic part of my answer, that was mostly due to countless posts (mostly in the US part of the forum) where users were complaining about American films getting foreign releases when they felt they should be available for the US first before anywhere else (as if movies were released by Nations and not companies...). It was not my intention to imply you're a xenophobe.

Hope this clears up my point of view and we all can go back to the things that really matter - watching movies and staying safe.

Well, I retract my use of the word ‘proper’ as it certainly wasn’t my intention to invalidate foreign releases.

Besides, I’m going to try and nab this

The only issue with foreign releases is where the title on the cover/spine is translated and bears little relation to what the original title is. But then, that also happens when world cinema is released in the UK and US too. But it doesn’t prevent me from not buying the release, I put up with the minor inconvenience of confusion. It also makes it frustrating if I’m searching up reviews of a release with the English title and getting very few results, before realising I should search by the translated title. Sometimes it can also be an issue when booklets or extras are not in English. Forced subs don’t always bother me though.

The other issue with not having an English blurb on the back as it makes it less easy to suggest a film to family or friends, having to use Wikipedia instead.

But these aren’t really issues.

It can be a little frustrating where the only option to watch a film is with the English dub e.g. Four Flies on Grey Velvet, Short Night of the Glass Dolls. Sometimes, films like Pollack’s Sabrina are only offered with a German dub.

It’s not any strict policy or anything, but it does feel nice to be able to say “oh, I have the Canadian release of a Canadian film, or a British release of a British film.”

btw, I reworked the cover for BD a couple of years ago because I have France release.

For some reason the forum won't let me insert the images or spoiler hide them....
