Default Best Toshiro Mifune films not by Kurosawa?

He’s the man, but the only non Kurosawa ones I’ve seen are the Samurai Trilogy. What other Mifune films should I seek out?

I don't suppose anyone's going to suggest Spielberg's 1941? No? Oh, well.

The two best that I've seen are The Life of Oharu (Mizoguchi) and The Sword of Doom (Okamoto) which has Nakadai in the lead for an added bonus.

These two are perhaps even better than the Mifune-Kurosawa collaborations.

Can't go wrong with the Tosh, Bronson, Delon and Ursula all in one film.

That's a tough one. I'd probably say The Samurai trilogy. That's probably cheating, but I look at them as one complete saga, and Mifune shows great range through his character's transformation.

God where do you start? The Samurai Trilogy has to be the first suggestion for sure, and you're not cheating MifuneFan, it says best films in the thread title! So you can add Samurai Saga to that trilogy, Mifune doing a Japanese Cyrano de Bergerac.

Gotta include his films with Kihachi Okamoto as well: Samurai Assassin, Red Lion, Zatoichi vs Yojimbo being the obvious three that are easily available. I suppose you could argue his relationship with Inagaki and Okamoto was just as important and fruitful as with Kurosawa.
