I won't watch unless I'm bashed over the head with political correctness claptrap...how diverse is the cast? Is there a strong female sorry - gender neutral - lead?

Yeah, I would love several seasons of his, as well as Richard E. Grant, John Hurt, and Paul McGann

At least with Hurt and McGann, we got tons of Big Finish plays of them in the roll. Not quite the same thing as on TV, but it's not bad.

Please explain this to me. Why is Peter Cushing playing the Doctor and not Hartell or Troughton?

From what I understand Cushing was more well known by US audiences in the day.

I can finally upgrade from my DVD copies. I've been a Doctor Who fan for almost 40 years.

They were busy making the show. Back in the 60's the series pretty much shot year round - 50 weeks a year, if I recall right. That's why you would get episodes where the Doctor gets sick and passes out for the next half hour, so they didn't kill poor William Hartell.

Is it possible to follow this film without having seen any of the Dr. Who shows?

I'm planning on getting this for Peter Cushing and for the general aesthetic, but I've never followed any of the shows.

Cushing's take on the role is very different to William Hartnell's, more doddery absent minded inventor than impatient grumpy old man.

Yep!

Even though it's essentially a remake of the 2nd serial of the original 1st season it does a good job of introducing a new audience to the doctor/companions/daleks etc.

Though I will say the film does take creative liberties with the characters and mythos that had been established at that point in the series, though not to the detriment to the film itself. As a life long Doctor Who fan I do love the Cushing films, the first one in particular has a good balance of humour and seriousness.

And also why Patrick Troughton, who didn't get any time off, left: the weight of having to carry the show and so much of the lengthy expositionary dialogue week after week for 40-44 episodes a year took its toll on his nerves and understandably made him increasingly bad tempered on the set in his last season. Ironically when they came back a couple of years later with Jon Pertwee, they agreed to everything they wouldn't give Troughton - fewer episodes each year (25-26) and more equal sharing of much of the exposition (hence the enlarged role of the Brigadier and U.N.I.T.).

You absolutely can! Although I'm a lifelong fan of Doctor Who and have been watching for 30+ years, both of the Cushing films (the second being Daleks: Invasion Earth 2150 AD, which KL is supposed to be announcing today) were remakes of two William Hartnell serials, but with liberties taken and absolutely made for an audience who didn't know/follow the series. They're definitely worth having in your collection!

How is Cushing in Dr. Who as opposed to At the Earth's Core? Normally I love that dear gentleman, but this one performance, specifically the style of speaking he adopted, like he had been told it was for a Children's Afternoon Hour special, I found annoying.
