Default Tattoo (1981) coming from Scream Factory

Quote:
Academy Award®-nominee* Bruce Dern is at his unhinged best in this terrific thriller!

His twisted passion for her … and her desire to escape will mark both of their lives forever. In this highly controversial story of unrequited love, a morbid, violent-tempered Vietnam vet lives out his darkest fantasy. Karl Kinsky, a tattoo artist (Bruce Dern, The Hateful Eight) kidnaps a model who has become his obsession. Maud Adams (Octopussy) gives a riveting performance as the woman of his evil desires … and the canvas for his full-bodied, ink-laden art. This daring and visually compelling drama ruthlessly careens down a path of taboos, tattoos and tantalizing seductions. Director Bob Brooks (Space: 1999) combines eroticism, sexuality and love to make Tattoo one of the most suspenseful thrillers ever filmed.

Never thought this would get a BD release since it never got even a DVD release over here. As I understand it, Tattoo was a Joseph E. Levine (Avco Embassy) production but was released by Fox in the US and Handmade Films overseas.

Fox hasn't done much with it in recent years, so this probably comes from StudioCanal (who owns the Avco Embassy/Dino Di Laurentiis catalog) unless proven otherwise.

A surprising release. The only other time I’ve seen this available was on vhs in the bargain bin at a Bradlee’s in 1995.

Wow, I had completely forgotten about this film. I saw it when it first played in theaters in 1981. Elaborate tattoos were in their infancy back then. My girlfriend at the time had one and I had none. We saw the film and loved it.

It didn't play long and I guess it was considered a flop in some circles. I never saw this blu-ray release coming. Will definitely pick this one up for the memories.

Joseph E. Levine had no connection with Avco Embassy after 1974. His post-Embassy projects were independent productions that were pre-sold to different distributors in the various territories. Studio Canal might very well own the film now, but it isn't part of the Embassy library it acquired.

*** Update on TATTOO (1981)***

We hate to break bad news but our previously announced Blu-ray release of the 1981 thriller TATTOO has been cancelled.

We're sincerely sorry for getting hopes up for anyone who was interested in the release. (We were excited about it too.) Unfortunately, it was discovered later in our production process that we did not have usable film elements to create a new and suitable HD master. If any developments that are promising on that front surfaces in the future, we’ll put it back on the schedule and re-announce.

If you pre-ordered through us directly on our site, our customer service department has issued refunds as of today. Please allow for up to 5 business days for them to be processed.

I'm disappointed by this news, but I'm not totally tearful or heartbroken.

This was one of my adventurous Scream Factory blind buys that would have probably sat in my unwatched stack for a good while.

When and if it does come down the pipes on Blu-ray later on, I'll be ready with my wallet.

Why on earth would they even announce this if they didn't have a usable HD master?

"When we originally announced the release, we were very confident we had film elements to make a Blu-ray. As we explained, we unfortunately learned later in the process than we would have liked that we didn't have usable film.

People whine for studios to release what they have the rights to right away, then whine when they cancel a release because the announced a title before they had all the pieces together. Pick one.

Eh, from the comments on this thread it doesn't seem like this is a title many people were whining about a release for. Plus, canceling a title is alot worse than not releasing it right away. But I get what you mean.
