Because of the success of the Dalek serial. And to get to see the Daleks in color.

In the early 1960s, Amicus (formed in the UK by Noo Yoik producers Subotsky and Rosenberg) were doing pretty good business shadowing the more successful Hammer films. And when Hammer diversified into family entertainment, releasing films in the summer break for the holidaying little ’uns, Amicus smelled a new commercial avenue. After the Daleks’ runaway success, Subotsky approached the BBC with a view to buying the rights and shooting a Dalek movie.

I'm planning on getting this for Peter Cushing and for the general aesthetic, but I've never followed any of the shows.
Yes. As others have said, both films are remakes of serials from the show, but are designed for those whom aren't familiar with the show (Dr. Who in the movies is a human inventor instead of a Time Lord, for example).

Same reason as why most things exists. Money.

Remaking UK TV shows as movies was commonplace in the pre-VHS era, especially when so many showswere wiped after transmission and never seen again. Hammer specialised in radio and TV spinoffs, from Quatermass to On the Buses, and independent companies in particular found TV a regular source of affordable properties with name recognition. Major US studios remade TV plays like Marty, 12 Angry Me, Judgment at Nuremberg and Days of Wine and Roses. Neither of these UK Dalek TV series was ever rebroadcast in the UK and remained unseen after their 1964 transmission until they were released on VHS in 1989-90. The films were literally the only version of the stories you could see for nearly a quarter of a century.

This! My first exposure to The Daleks and The Dalek Invasion of Earth wasn't the series, it was these movies. My local PBS station took forever before finally getting around to running the B&W episodes, but the local UHF station ran these two on their Sci-Fi Saturdays in pretty constant rotation, in between Godzilla films and Logan's Run.

Not a Dr. Who fan at all and not generally into the Sci-Fi genre either BUT I'm a huge Cushing fan. Are these two worth getting for Peter and for what looks like pretty fast moving action (from the trailers) alone?

But it has nothing to do with the show, so why would I want to watch it? I guess that's my issue.

Well, first of all, they are fun movies, so there's that.

And second, I don't know why you keep saying they have "nothing to do with the show". That is a false statement. They are big screen adaptations of two of the BBC TV stories. They use the majority of the story and have the same writer.

Then don’t watch it. Easy. Why force yourself to watch something you have no interest in?

For everything everyone else said - they're nostalgic and fun big-screen adaptations of Doctor Who, and because Peter Cushing is one of the greatest actors ever. He may not have been as critically-revered as, say, Max von Sydow (rest in peace), but he is still as voraciously loved by millions of fans.

Plus, you will lose some cred here if you don't buy these.

It seems you are looking for a reason not to watch them which is OK, but I don't get why you keep saying these two films have nothing to do with the show when they are film adaptions of the original serials.

Because they are fun; something you seem to need a dose of.

Ditto! I always count 1986 as the year my fandom started, but that's only because I was four then and I can't remember a time in my life when I didn't watch the show.

In case anyone missed it, you can now pre-order both Dr Who and the Daleks and Daleks' Invasion Earth: 2150 AD directly from KL for $17.97 each (also on Amazon for a higher price, but I'm sure that will drop before release).

You can now order these from Target:

Dr Who and the Daleks

Daleks' Invasion Earth: 2150 AD

Looks like they're both still listed with the original 7 July release date, but I imagine that will update at some point.

EDIT: I'd love it if they ended up adding the Rifftrax as additional bonus features.

That's a question better directed towards the Kino Insider. August 11th may only be a tentative date.

Thank you! I edited my post so it's no longer a question, but rather a statement of interest, regardless of likelihood. I don't feel like bugging the Insider!

For me, these are instances where I'm more interested in the supplementary material than the film itself. Like THE OSCAR including the commentary w/ Patton Oswalt & co. At least Kim Newman's commentating on the DR WHO films. I love these sorts of "contextual commentaries".
