United Kingdom Have I Got News for You (comedy panel quiz show)

Have watched the first two editions of the spring series of Have I Got News for You, and I've enjoyed them. Considering the circumstances with you-know-what in the news, I think they've done well, and it has still been funny.

I love the fact that Paul Merton has a wall of films on disc - as he puts it, a collection of Mary Pickford films unrivalled throughout the British Isles - on the shelves behind him.

Last Friday night's new edition was as good (and as funny) as the first two of this year's spring series. This coming Friday night's new edition is presented by Pointless' Alexander Armstrong (one of those who has guest presented HIGNFY the most times, along with Jo Brand and probably one or two others).

For nearly the past week, there have been repeats of Pointless on. In the final round of one of them, earlier this week, one of the sub-categories was something along the words of 'Female members of the House of Lords since 2000'. I don't know if they were a pointless answer (Osman said there were over a hundred pointless answers in that sub-category), but I thought of the lady who was a guest panellist on an edition of HIGNFY several years ago (she was teamed up with Ian Hislop), Baroness Trumpington.

She was hilarious on that edition.

The first one with Steph McGovern was terrible. I think the one last week with Victoria Coren seems to have been much better edited and was more enjoyable as a result.

On the whole, I enjoyed the series from earlier this year. If there is a new series this autumn (usually they start in October), I'm wondering if they will film in the studio without an audience. Last Friday night's new edition of A Question of Sport was the first edition shot without a studio audience.

Going back in time, some of the moments on the show which have stood out for me:

- the late Baroness Trumpington on Ian's team (very funny lady)
- the Madame Tussauds imitator round where they had to guess who the famous person was
- Roy Hattersley being replaced by a tub of lard
- the Fruitcake or Loony round (the camera kept cutting to Nigel Farage, asking him to guess whether an MP was a fruitcake or loony)
- the clip they showed a few times, of Robert Kilroy-Silk on a gameshow saying "share or shaft?".

Read during this past weekend that there are going to be changes made to another long-running panel series, A Question of Sport. Host Sue Barker (who has hosted the series since replacing David Coleman over twenty years ago) and team captains Matt Dawson and Phil Tuffnell are being replaced.

I also read that a few of the existing employees at the BBC are getting substantial pay rises, for example Zoe Ball - an increase of almost a million quid! Incredible - the BBC is usually crying poverty yet it can afford to pay obscene salaries.

The pay rises are nearly all women who have been paid less than the going rate for men for the same work for years and is taking that into account to avoid even more expensive discrimination lawsuits which the BBC keep losing. The BBC have fiddled the numbers somewhat - while they're being now paid the same as men, it's the same rate as men after the highest paid men have either taken 25% pay cuts this year or left the BBC, not what men were paid for the same work all the years women were getting only a small fraction for the same work.

A new series (the autumn series) of Have I Got News for You starts on BBC One a week on Friday (2nd October), with Damian Lewis guest-hosting the first edition (source: this week's issue of a TV listings magazine).

So good to see them back in the studio (they've got the usual precautions in place). Watching tonight's new edition (the first of this year's autumn series).

I'll miss Paul Merton's massive Mary Pickford silent movie DVD collection in the background.

On a related note, fierce anti-BBC campaigner Charles Moore, who has often complained about BBC salaries and was Boris' wrecking ball pick for BBC Chairman has ruled himself out because... the £100,000 a year salary was too low (it's alleged he wanted £225,000).

Maybe he thought that bearing in mind certain BBC presenters earn about 10 times that amount, he probably expected to be paid more than the present chairman. I think (correct me if I'm wrong) the current chairman only works 3 days a week, so still a pretty good salary anyway.

Well, those presenters work a lot more than the chairman (for example, Andrew Neil regularly did 5-6 shows a week), and in some cases the 'earnings' that are reported also includes the cost of producing the shows they appear in through their production companies (which means they're paying the annual salaries of the crew out of that amount), which in some instances can work out cheaper than the BBC producing it themselves.

You're right, generally speaking (probably in most companies it's the same) chairmen don't put in the same hours as those under him (or her).

Andrew Neil was great. He's apparently launching a news channel called 'GB News' sometime next year from what I briefly read in an article. I liked his style of interviewing and I'll be watching this new channel when it eventually starts broadcasting.

The great - and rare - thing about Neil was that even though he's a diehard Tory and chairman of Tory-supporting Spectator magazine, he's a reporter first and would show no fear or favour on TV, going for the jugular on Tories and opposition alike with equal surgical precision and impeccable research. No wonder Boris chickened out of the interview he promised him. I'm not entirely convinced his BBC show being axed in July was unrelated to his not giving ministers a free ride...

I would have paid good money to watch Neil interview Johnson - he would have wiped the floor with him, I'm sure. As you say, Boris knew he'd be in for a rough ride so decided to stay away. I really do hope Andrew Neil continues doing interviews on his new channel with the same clinical precision he is famous for.

Looking forward to tonight's new edition. It takes the usual week off next week for this year's Children in Need telethon.
