Thumbs up 2020 OLED TVs - LG CX & Sony A8H, how do they compare

For the entire months of March and April this has been the most popular question we have received by email, phone calls and PMs. So your wish is my command.

Sony included Value Electronics in the allocation of their new 2020 A8H Series 4K HDR OLED TVs. If all goes as scheduled we will receive our first A8H shipment on Friday, May 11st.

We'll immediately set-up Sony's A8H butt next to LG's 2020 CX OLED TV in our calibration lab for careful and accurate comparison and evaluation. Our calibrator will work with me on this and we'll give our impressions pre and post calibration. We'll also post pre and post calibration reports and scans and measure the peak and minimum luminance levels, color accuracy, color volume and motion resolution test results.

For now we can discuss the technical and feature differences in these two highly anticipated 2020 OLED TVs

Sony 65AH8 cost more the the LG 65CXPUA series, even the 55" there is quite a difference. ($2,299.99 vs $1799.99 (on sale)

I kinda like the LG stand more then the Sony feet, but please give us the critique. Both of these will see the 48" models also, which again LG will probably be cheaper by a bit.

The 48" is called the A9S, and considered part of the Master Series. So based on that, it's positioned as a higher-end model than the A8H.

But that said, it seems to be more similar than not based on the specs.

True, but you are comparing LG's sale price to the list price. It's closer on the 65", Sony A8H $3,099, LG CX $2,799, but we have them on sale for $2,497.

We have not seen the USA specs on Sony's 48" A9S, we're promised a new video processor, but for the EU it seems to have the X1 Ultimate processor.

I thought the American A9S and European 48" A9 would be pretty much the same TV? That is usually the case.

Just speculating, I think what Sony are doing here is they're making the smaller model a slight "downgrade" compared to its big brothers. So the A9S gets the X1 Ultimate, while the 55"-77" A9H gets the next-gen processor. Kind of similar to how the 49" X950H/XH95 excludes the X-Wide Angle, superior built-in sound and backlit remote you get with the 55" and larger models.

Good points, ^ and it makes sense. At CES I was told the A9H and A9S would have the new unnamed processor, but since the EU 48A9S was announced with the X1 Ultimate processor it seems that we'll see the same Worldwide.

I'll post whatever I hear from Sony.

Nothing preventing you from starting threads dedicated to Panasonic's OLEDs! I'm sure there are other owners around.

Considering you own 65" and 75" Z9Ds plus a projector setup, and have talked about wanting even larger TVs... out of curiosity, may I ask for what purpose you'd want the 48" OLED? A computer/gaming monitor, perhaps?

Haha, nah.

Out of interest for the tech and for diversity's sake, I've been thinking of expanding my Sony familia with one of their OLEDs. The missus wasn't having a 55" TV as an addition to what we already have though (I was looking at the 55A9G last year), so perhaps a 48" might get her approval.

Ah, makes sense.

Where'd you put it, though?

It would have to be the missus' wardrobe/dressing room, so that's going to be a though one to sell already.

Perhaps after May/June when Robert has both he can give us his first impressions between these two new 48" 4K OLEDs. They both seem more orientated to gamers as well as space limited applications.

Another day, another rash of phone calls, emails and PMs saying someone on another forum is spreading FUD about Sony's A8G and A8H.

First I was told that Sony gives better support to the A9G than they do to the A8G and upcoming A8H. They pointed out the fact that the A8G got the Android Pie upgrade and the A8G did not. Well the only truth to that statement is that the A9G did get the Android Pie upgrade and the A8G did not, but where the untruth comes in is that it's due to Sony's decision to give better support to the Master Series.

The real and only reason the A8G did not get the Android Pie is because it was not designed to support Android Pie, but the A8H has and will continue to get every other upgrade that the A9G gets. The A8G processor was not capable to support the Pie operating system.

So this is totally a non issue for the upcoming A8H as it will launch with the flagship X1 Ultimate processor and ship with the Android Pie Smart user interface and Android's new and more powerful operating system ready to rock and roll right out of the box.

I'll post the other misinformation shortly.

Welcome to a new episode of how the World (outside of Blu-ray.com) turns with misinformation.

Here’s some of the new controls and settings we’ll have on the A8H when it arrives early May. No upgrade is needed it will come out of the box ready. For 2020 Sony has enhanced the A8H X1 Ultimate chip to include Dynamic Metadata and eARC.

Clearness, aka, BFI are, off, Min, 1, 2, 3, 4, Max. To adjust Clearness, set MotionFlow to Custom first and to your specific liking.

The A8H will also have the new Android Pie operating system also ready out of the box.

Last edited by Robert Zohn; 05-07-2020 at 01:53 AM. Reason: added "off" for the Clearness settings
