Default Playstation 3 as Blu-ray player

I have been seriously considering buying a playstation 3. I have a blu-ray disk drive, so I can enjoy crisp picture display on my 26" lcd monitor. Can anyone attest to the blu-ray capability of the playstation 3. God of war 3 is coming out later this year, and I must get my hands on it.

I have a PS3 and I own 145 blu-ray movies. Only had playback issues on one of them at first(weird) that now seem to be resolved. Not to mention the PS3 can upgrade its firmware with wireless Internet, always a plus.

the PS3 is more than a blu-ray player or a video game console. it's the ultimate entertainment solution. if you have the money for it, there's no reason not to have a PS3. you will find yuorself with more things to do with the PS3 than there is time.

to answer your question however, i have not heard a single complain regarding the PS3 as a blu-ray player since the firmware update that provided the last of the audio codecs.

I ONLY have a PS3 for my movies... it's been perfect for me. I upgraded my internal HDD and now I have all my pictures and music on it too.

Yeah, it's arguably the best BD player on the market, since it plays everything, can be updated, and is faster than everything else due to its Cell BE. Plus, it also plays games and does other home entertainment stuff.

I've had a few issues regarding certain discs from Blockbuster, but I think those were due to the discs themselves being busted up.

Buy the PS3 as a slightly more expensive Blu-ray player... be unbelievably astounded by the incredible versatility of the equipment that you just added to your HT!

It would seriously take a while to list everything the PS3 can do that other Blu-ray players can't. . .

The PS3 is the best bang for the buck Blu-Ray player out there. There are stand alone units that can best the PS3's Blu-Ray performance but your going to pay more the $399 for them.

Playstation is a great buy, of course playing games and blu,s are what you hear the most about it, but for me the #1 thing mine is used for is
storing ripped movies and CD,s on, I find it easier to start the PS3 up
then find a disk.

i too, have loved my ps3, and consider it one of my most precious investments. i am a bit biased, since i do a lot of gaming as well.

to balance things out tho, as others might mention later on, the Ps3 siaxis controller, seems to be a challenge for some users. and the current XMB can be a bit intimidating for other users. it really depends on the users. for the controller, id suggest to get their ps3 remote control as well to resolve the first challenge. you can also set the ps3 to auto play each time a dvd/blu-ray/game is placed into the console.

if you are into gaming, and would consider a multimedia center as well, this is a great solution. if you plan on purchasing this only as a blu-ray player, there are a number of options out there as well, aside from this one.

Yeah, the most awesome piece of home entertainment equipment ever.

I put a 500GB HDD in it, and got a playTV and now I have a Tivo with an ultra smooth interface. And it seems to convert 1080i broadcast into 1080p on playback too. I'm not sure if it does live as I never watch live :P

Great games.

Great for Blu Rays

Great for frequent updates. All the things it didn't have when I got it initially it now has (like disc resume)

Everyone above me said it best. Even if you don't play games, there are many other advantages to having a PS3 for all of it's multimedia capabilities (pictures, videos, music, storage), internet, "future-proof".

On top of all of that, you may find that you enjoy playing the odd PSN game (cheap games you can download straight to your PS3) from time to time.
