The story of an archer in the army of Richard Coeur de Lion who fights against the Norman invaders and becomes the legendary hero known as Robin Hood.
I love the casting for this so far!! According to The Hollywood Reporter, actress Vanessa Redgrave is joining the cast of Ridley Scott’s untitled Robin Hood project. The film, which is beginning production in the U.K., stars Russell Crowe as Robin Hood; Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian; Mark Strong as King John’s henchman Sir Godfrey; Scott Grimes as Welshman Will Scarlet; Kevin Durand as Scotsman Little John; and Alan Doyle as the Irish troubadour Allan Adayle. Redgrave will play Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, mother of King John (Oscar Isaacs). The project, originally envisioned as a revisionist take on the Robin Hood story told from the point of view of the Sheriff of Nottingham, was scheduled to begin filming last August ut was put on hold in July for more script work. Written by Ethan Reiff, Cyrus Voris and Brian Helgeland, the new tale follows Robin during his early days in King Richard’s army, his return to Nottingham and his creation of a band of mercenaries who try to prevent a civil war. The film is scheduled for release on May 14th, 2010. News: Russell Crowe has hacked off the hair he was growing to play Robin Hood - because he decided his medieval hero wouldn't look like a rocker. The New Zealand-born star admits he has been working around his new look for his past two films - and then simply decided to play Robin as a cropped hair hero. He says, "I just got sick of it. I made two movies working around the length of the hair - just for Robin Hood - and then, once we finally got the green light, and I knew that I had to click into the work-outs seriously, it didn't suit any more." And, unlike previous movie Robin Hoods, Crowe won't be wearing tights: "Basically, the period we're dealing with is 1198 to 1202 and tights weren't invented for another 400 years. "I do have a pretty nice, snazzy pair of leather pants with a rather large cod piece." I wonder if he'll get back to his more trim Gladiator look than, cause he's been a lot heavier over the last few years and not just for Body of Lies. Bleh tbh I'm not sure this is a story that needs to be told again. I love Men in Tights and Prince of Thieves and the animated Disney movie...would take quite a trailer and a very glowing review from Ebert to get me to see this.

You actually need Ebert to tell you what movies to see? I thought all men possessed free will? |

We already have a Robin Hood from Disney and a Robin Hood with Kevin Costner....
...but apparently that's just not enough Robin Hood? Personally my favorite was men in tights....but I mean come on.....the whole reason that was funny is that Robin Hood has been done to death, and thusly does not need to ever be done again. Even with Ridley Scott behind the project, somehow I doubt they can do another iteration of this story and get away with it while still making money. It would have to be pretty damn gritty, to be sure. Crowe would have to deliver some oscar worthy acting. Nah, just doesn't seem likely....but yes, even I who doubt the most will hold a tiny flickering flame for Scott, who needs to prove he can still pump out a beast or two. |

Couldn't agree more especially with what they don't know is true fact or fiction, there are some many versions of the story of Robin Hood and name variations that there aren't even enough movies yet to cover them all, not to mention non have ever been good, so let's hope for a brutal/gladiator like Robin Hood brought to us by Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott!

Anyone interested in Robin Hood, there was a documentary on History TV here in Canada, loved it so much I got it transfert on a DVD. It's the real story of Robin Hood of sort and they show the evolution of the characters, in poems, songs (yes originaly in the 12th century Robin Hood was in songs) and books. Historian talk of the evolution of the character being change by story tellers to fit the times. For example Maid Marian was not added to the stories until the 1600's. If you can ever find it on TV I recommend you watch it.

Robin Hood is like any oft-told tale, in that making a film from it says more about the makers than they do about the subject. It's like Jazz - a theme handed off to another artist to see what he does with it. It's actually rather extraordinary the number of artists who have taken Robin Hood as a subject.
