I know, money, right?
Seems that everything gets a prequel these days. What are your favorites/least favorites? Mine are: Favorites The Good the Bad, and the Ugly Fantastic Beasts : Where to Find Fantastic Beasts : Crimes Least Favorites Exorcist: the Beginning Solo: A Star Wars Story Last edited by Damon1281; 05-15-2020 at 10:46 PM. Reason: ps. I don't care if there's a thread about this already |

A sizeable portion of The Godfather Part II is a great prequel.
The STAR WARS prequels are sh*t. |

I won't deny that many of the others--Star Wars, The Hobbit, Prometheus--have serious flaws, but I still find them entertaining. Fantastic Beasts did nothing for me though.
ToD and TGTBATU I never really thought of as prequels--they're just separate adventures from earlier timeframes with no direct connections to the other films. Maybe that's the best way to handle a "prequel" after all though--they have no checkboxes to check, so they do their own thing and stand alone well. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is not a prequel. The Dollars movies aren't in the same timeline. Would make no sense if Blondie got his poncho before killing the Lee Van Cleef character. Would make no sense if the Lee Van Cleef character came back as a good guy who doesn't know Blondie in For a Few Dollars More.

Anyone here remember which film's release popularized the word "prequel"?
I have a very specific memory of this, I think it was coined by a reviewer rather than the studio, but could be wrong about that. Checking Wikipedia, it seems that at least one other person remembers the film that I do, although there are no citations. It seems that the word was first coined 25 years earlier than the film I remember in reference to a SF story from the '50s. |

Lee Van Cleef played a different character in FFDM. Also, I think by today's standards you're correct, but at the time fit with the sensibilities of the audience. You can shoot holes in most. |
