HDMI vs Component at 1080i

I have an older display that can accept a single HDMI input with 2 component inputs.

I recently got a new HDMI receiver, but have had problems when running the signal from the BD player to the receiver and then the receiver out to the tv through HDMI.

I'm thinking this is possibly due to the tv HDMI version ??? Any ideas ??

My main question is to ask the members if there will be a difference between HDMI vs. Component cables when outputting to the tv at 1080i.

let us know what kind of television you got, I'm sure specs can still be searched out somewhere. Wondering what kind of problems you are having when hooking it up like you said above. Possibly lip sync issues I'm guessing? HDMI will give you the superier quality to any display you hook it to, but the component cables is right behind the HDMI, so it may be a very slight difference, if any at all. Let us know more, even what kind of cables your using for hookup.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't component video cables transfer full 1080p video? I mean the main advantage of HDMI is the combination of video and audio in one cable and it can transfer the HD codecs. Technically you will get the same results from component and multichannel analog cables as one HDMI cable.

Personally there is no reason to need an HDMI cable to the TV. I mean it is definitely convenient to use one cable, but the TV won't output surround sound. I don't see it as a downgrade from HDMI to just use component video and stereo audio to the TV.

But on the other hand you should be able to use HDMI from your Blu-ray player, to your receiver, and to your TV. What TV, player, and receiver are you using?

True, but you can still attain the same video quality from either cable. So technically the OP can use component video cables and be fine. Problem is he should be able to use all HDMI cables, so there must be a problem with his settings.

i use both component and hdmi/dvi to 1080i tv and see little difference.

I have a 3-4 year old 52" DLP
Toshiba 52HM84

Can't figure it out. Seems like it might be some HDCP thing with the TV...

Was wondering if you knew of anything that might negate this (besides simply using component).
Can't seem to find anything regarding a firmware update...
I might consider running it through a Splitter and maybe the splitter will allow the HDCP content to pass. At this point I'm willing to try anything...

try using the hdmi straight to the tv. perhaps the receiver is doing something the tv doesnt like. what exactly is the tv doing/not doing with the video? or is it an audio problem?

I had a PS/3 going to a Yamaha receiver and then out to a Panasonic Plasma.

This was giving me 5.1 sound.

For two weeks my PS/3 was in for repairs so I hooked up an Insignia BD player.

At first this was giving only 2.0 sound.

Finally I found a setting on the Yamaha receiver that said something like:

1) Send sound to receiver only
2) Send sound to receiver and other device (TV)

For the PS/3 either setting worked. For the Insignia, I had to send sound only to the receiver.

Your problem seems different, but I'd carefully examine all the receiver settings first.

everything I have read oin the internet says your tv is HDCP compatible...so im wondering if you have the Onkyo 605 set correctly?

did you configure the Onkyo HDMI Inputs/output correctly?

HDMI Monitor Out = Yes?

Yeah, straight runs to the tv from the source (BD Player, Sat DVR) are fine.
It's just any source that I'm running to the receiver and then back out to the tv using HDMI are where the green screen flickers are occuring.

I have a Pioneer VSX-1018 receiver.
HDMI out is turned on as I tried it with another tv with no problems.

Thinking about running the video through a splitter/switch when it's coming out of the receiver as there is some odd handshaking going on.

Quick question, what resolution settings do you have going into the TV? 1080p, 1080i, 720p?

Your TV has a native resolution of 720p, try only sending it 720p.

Got a new receiver (Pioneer VSX-1018).

Hooked the BD Player to the BD input on the unit and ran another HDMI cable from the HDMI out to the HDMI input of my tv (older Toshiba DLP - 52HM84)
and all I'm getting is a Green screen with intermittent flickering.
I can't even get the Manufactures menu screen to come up.

Hooked up the receiver to another tv with the same wires/hardware and it worked fine.

Do you think it's an HDCP issue ?

The TV works just fine when I'm hooking the individual components up directly.

Thinking about buying 2 different HDMI splitters/switches hoping that might do something different. Not really sure at this point. BD Player to Receiver to Switch to TV (beats me)

Any ideas ???

BD Player is a Sony S350
Output is set to 1080i

TV DOES take 1080i signals as that is what the BD Player and SAT Receiver are set to output. When I ran them direct the tv had no problems.

I don't get any picture, just an immediate green screen with intermittent flickers.

So your HDMI input works correctly when the player is connected directly to the TV?

...then your TV's HDCP compatible.

Issue probably lies somewhere in either th receiver or the player.
