“I’ve got a big one for you. This is a big one.” When Steven Soderbergh, prolific filmmaker of such classics as Out of Sight, Traffic, and Ocean’s Eleven tells you a “big one” is coming, you pay attention and listen. And Soderbergh did not disappoint. On today’s episode of Flaviar’s NightCap Live, he revealed he’s written a sequel to his 1989 breakthrough film Sex, Lies, and Videotape. And he wants to make it.

Soderbergh didn’t elaborate on the plot details of the sequel, nor how long the idea’s been circling. It’s worth noting that his 2002 film Full Frontal was considered a spiritual sequel, though it features none of the original cast or characters from Sex, Lies, and Videotape. The original film was Soderbergh’s breakthrough film, putting him on the map as a filmmaker worth noticing. It premiered at Cannes in 1989, winning that festival’s top prize, the Palme d’Or. Soderbergh was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay (and he calls himself not a writer), and the film wound up being preserved in the Library of Congress.

But there are successful precedents, like Arcand's The Barbarian Invasions (2003), which was even more acclaimed than The Decline of the American Empire (1986).

Could be interesting. The last writing credit of his was in 2006, and the last film of his he wrote was Solaris, (which I’m a fan of)! So I’m curious to see how this turns out! I agree Spader or nothing!

I had to look at his filmography, but as I suspected James Spader has never done a sequel to one of his movies. Age of Ultron doesn't count as he only did one in the series. I'd be surprised if they got him back. He seems like a guy who doesn't look back, as I don't often see him doing reunions or even showing up on special features for his previous work.

Andie MacDowell and Laura San Giacomo To Reprise Their Roles in Sequel

Steven Soderbergh is working on a sequel to his hit 1989 drama “Sex, Lies and Videotape” with Andie MacDowell and Laura San Giacomo agreeing to reprise their roles as sisters.

Soderbergh disclosed the project at the conclusion of a recent interview with Filmmaker Magazine.
