Default The Revolution has begun! Just canceled my Netflix Account...

I've started a new thread on this subject because I don't want this very important message to get lost in the shuffle of the other Netflix thread which has degenerated to troll feeding and discussions on BD 3D.

So, Mods, please I beg of you... allow this thread to stand without locking it or merging it with the other thread.

So, I decided to put my money where my mouth is and I called Netflix up and I canceled my membership.

The customer service represenative was very polite and never asked my why I wascanceling my account. But after verifying my information, he asked what netflix could have done to provide me better service.

I asked him why he thinks I'm canceling my service... why is everybody canceling their service today?

He said, "because of the Blu Ray service rate increase."

I said, "Jackpot! And it's not even an issue necessarily of the $4.00. The issue is that I've always had tremendous service from Netflix and I've been completely disregarded by your company with a 300% rate increase and that this my way of protesting."

He said he didn't blame me whatsoever and that he's been hearing it all day.

So here's how it is. A wave of rebellion has begun.

Stand up with me cancel your membership and encourage others to do the same. Go to Blockbuster for a couple of months and maybe we can convince TPTB at Netflix that this was a bad idea all the way around as Blockbuster's membership increases and their's drops.

The worst case scenario is that you can always sign back up with them with minimal effort, but it's good to make them squirm.

Maybe, they'll reconsider this exploitative rate hike before April 27.

Question What other alternatives are there?

I abandoned Netflix a while ago, went to Blockbuster.

I quit BB last month, and was waiting to see what else I could do.

There are really only 3 ways to rent the blu-rays for me:
  • Netflix - getting more expensive
  • Blockbuster - frequently didn't have enough copies of new releases
  • Redbox - very few blu-rays and I don't rent DVDs they suck

I know a lot of people hate Blockbuster, but I feel sorry for them. They are on the verge of bankruptcy and if they go out, Netflix will really stick it to people.

Yeah that's one of the few things my father and I agree on, competition is a good thing. Therefore I hope ALL of you have Hollywood Video, Hastings and/or Mom & Pop rental stores. I don't rent at all, the whole point to having as many movies and TV shows as I do is to never have to rent again.

You have done all you can do. But, there's are legions of Netflix members who are about to buy BD players, or others who will sign up after they buy a BD player.

Netflix is looking to their future profitability - on that you can be sure.

I have a feeling that the revolution, although understandable, might be short-lived.

How do you figure that? Unless you are just counting the $1 rate for the Blu-ray rentals. I am only being charged $1 more. I don't really care and I don't even rent that many Blu-ray discs, maybe one a month. I like Netflix because they carry movies that other places don't. They have plenty of obscure stuff all the old TV series that I want to see that you just can't rent at a Blockbuster store or from a Redbox. The extra charges haven't made me mad. What has made me mad is that EVERY dvd that I have in my Queue says Long Wait or Very Long Wait! The only thing that is available now is the only Blu-ray disc I have in my queue...

BTW, you don't have to call them to cancel your account, you can do it online. I have done it before and I think it even asks you why you are cancelling or whatever. That way you can get your true feelings in writing instead of just telling someone who will probably ignore you.

Yeah, that would be how the math works out. I was on the three at a time plan, like most people. And do the math on what kind of increase percentage overall that is (including the $1 hike in 09/08)... in a down economy.

First, then why are you chipping in your two cents? Second, why do you think you aren't next with an obnoxious rate increase. If they do it to Blu Ray customers with no backlash, DVD customers are next.

For the record, I was a huge fan of Netflix before I got that email in my inbox this morning and I feel betrayed. I would have expected this utter disregard for customers from Blockbuster, not Netflix.

I'm well aware of that. I happened to be driving at the time I made the decision. For the record, Netflix prides themselves on customer service and satisfaction and their people log the results of every customer contact for review by supervisors and they record their conversations. I used to work in a call center, I know how it works. He didn't just ask me what Netflix could have done better for shi*s and giggles. It's in the better interest of his own job security to document what I said because it will be confirmed later when the calls are reviewed (or if they are monitored at the time by supervisors.) and compared to the call log.

I don't know what kind of pleasure you get from pi$$ing all over my party here, but regardless, you're just plain wrong about your conclusions.

Good luck with your revolution, man. I probably won't be joining you, but I can definitely respect taking a stance on something about which you feel passionately.

For me, it's "only" a $1 rate hike, and while I think it's lame in principle, it's a nice thing for my wife and I to have our date night every week where we get a new Blu-ray to watch. It's worth the $1 to me. If it goes up any more, though, I will pull the plug.

The thing that sucks is our Blockbuster is always out of the new release Blu-ray titles; I've never so much as been on a waiting list with Netflix. Hollywood Video is a nice option, but since we generally watch one movie per week, it's nice to have the whole have-a-movie-mailed-to-us-and-we-mail-it-back-when-we're-done-watching-it thing that Netflix offers. Then you've got the online watching, which I hope will eventually improve for us non-Roku (or XBOX or those standalones that do Netflix streaming) users in that we can have HD feeds.

Just buy the movies you want to see and then just sell/trade them on here if you don't end up liking them its what I have always done.

sorry I won't be joining the revolution either.. as to me Netflix is still less expensive than BB or other local rental places.. and the convenience is great. THere is a distribution center where I live and I get movies in two days.

Maybe 1 out of 4 of my Netflix movies are BD.

On another note. I did just cancel my subscription to DirecTv. They just had a big price increase.. and they finally reached the point where I can't justify giving them $70 a month for satellite TV. I did not have HD feed or any of the premium or sports extras. this was just expanded basic and SD DVR.

That is terrible pricing. I pay much less than that for the "Choice Extra with HD DVR" package with four boxes total my house (three standard and one HD).

If you cancel and return to them, your queue won't be waiting for you right? Losing my big queue is too much a price.

And the principle is what this is about. It's an arbitrary and exploitative and and their logic doesn't hold any water. And for those who rent DVD's primarily: YOU'RE NEXT.

I completely get how it's not a big deal for the casual viewer but look at it this way: if you respect the cause, just cancel for a month and go back. it's very easy, I've done it before. Blockbuster will give you 2 weeks free, so you can cancel them when you're done.

Quite honestly, I may wind up doing just that myself depending on how well Blockbuster treats me this time around.

Pretty sure it will be. Was last time I canceled and it was with Blockbuster and I canceled over a year ago wit them.
