Sony Delays PS3 Sales to Europe; Japan, U.S. on Track (Update1)
By Pavel Alpeyev and Kyoko Suzuki Sept. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Sony Corp., the world's biggest maker of video game players, delayed the release of its PlayStation 3 console in Europe until March, surrendering end-of-year sales to Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo Co. Sales in Japan and U.S. are on schedule for a November release, Ken Kutaragi, head of Sony's video-game business, said at a news conference in Tokyo today. Sony originally said it would sell the PS3 globally from November, after promising a ``spring'' release this year. European sales were delayed because of parts shortages for the high-definition Blu-ray player included in the console, he said. Sony is counting on the PS3 to help revive earnings at its games business and regain market share from Microsoft's Xbox 360, released almost a year ago. Nintendo, the world's largest handheld game player, is releasing its Wii console in the fourth quarter. The Tokyo-based company kept its shipment target for the consoles to 6 million units by March 2007, said Kutaragi, the chief executive officer of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. See for yourself, the PS3 will launch in March 2007! Not only we'll have to pay more than for a US PS3 with shipping and Taxes, but we'll get it 4 months later!
Thanks Sony for your empty promises. What's next, no 1080p for european PS3? http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?p...x5o&refer=home |

Only 400'000 units at launch for US and a measly 100'000 for japan...wow I'm shocked, that's as bad as the 360 launch...
"In the U.S., about 400,000 PlayStation 3 machines will be available when they go on sale Nov. 17. About 100,000 will be available on the Nov. 11 Japan launch date." http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2006/...layStation.php |

Certain amount of screaming and gnashing of teeth at my PS3 forum.
![]() I'll still get my Virtua Fighter 5, DMC4, FF13, and MGS4 at the same time everyone else does. Not the end of the world. And that's the main reason I want a PS3, the launch line up is pretty limp. My Sammy Blu Ray player is starting to look like a good purchase. ![]() Last edited by Applefiend; 09-06-2006 at 01:02 PM. |

I'm not surprised by this at all... I expected another delay as soon as I heard about the diode shortage, although I did believe that the shortage was because of the PS3. I'm actually surprised that they even attempted a worldwide launch, due to the fact that Europe usually gets things late anyways. I'm just glad they didn't delay it further in the US. I liek I stated in another thread, I just don't think Europe holds much weight when it comes to CE. Sony has a lot riding on the sucess of the PS3 as a Blu-ray player so it needs to get the consoles to the places that it going to make the greatest impact.
A good thing for the US and Japan however, is that they said they are only a month behind on production and a million units short from the goal. This should allow enough time for another shipment of PS3s before Christmas. Get ready to be in line or on e-Bay with those credit cards... Hopefully Sony will take care of the Europeans when it comes there though. IDK maybe a special bundle or color to reward them for waiting so long. Someone had better tell http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.st.../YG2300?id=ps3 or tell the communications department that Australia is no longer PAL.

Hmm, Europe is the second market for Playstation 2 just after USA...but as you say, I hope we'll get a reward for waiting longer. Like an extra BR-movie bundled. |

PS3 is still on track to make my prediction about actuate. I said between 2 to 4 million units by end of year. They might be able to send just over 2 million by then, but the news is still disappointing. |

Since the PS3 would have been my only BD player I felt this was the right section to post in.

Wow. The FUD and overreacting even made it here.
The sky is falling!!!! ![]() Simple logistics: 1.) Did anyone really believe they'd have 2 MILLION units on the streets by the end of 2006, especially when we've seen reports as recently as 1-2 weeks ago stating they have even begun production yet? 2.) A simultaneous world wide launch? Never been done before, logistical nightmare, and wisely...Sony's backing out of that nightmare. Unfortunately for the Europeans, it sets things back to the more typical cycle: Japan and US get the goods first, Europre gets it later/last. I figured a simultaneous world wide launch was going to be impossible. We're going to see at least Xbox360 like shortages, as expected. It's been that way for years anyways. Don't fall for the FUD folks. |

Geez, it was on the news this morning as I was driving into work. That's going to make this holiday season very interesting for sure. I keep hoping to get to an EB Games or Game Stop early enough when they go out for presale, but if not, I may take a day off work to sit in line at WalMart.
Wish they would do these game system releases when the weather was a little bit warmer. |

Latest launch figures are 400,000 units for the US and 100,000 for Japan. These figures a hell of a lot more believable than 2 million ever was. Sony's problem here has been overextension, overhype, and making these grandiose promises only to backpedal. All that's really happened here is: Reality. We're simply seeing things being ramped back down to a TYPICAL gaming console launch paradigm. It wouldn't be any big deal to anyone had Sony had not made some of these other grandiose statements prior. http://www.angry-gamer.net/pmwiki.ph..._Sony_Its_Over ^^ Get a load of the pissed off fanboys already. That's some funny stuff to read. WAY too much emotion and overreacting all the way around. |

At the very least, and there's no sugarcoating this: They're PR is completely in the crapper. Sony has seriously hurt their credibility in the past year, starting with last year's E3 on through to today. |

Hmm, this news certainly sucks, but oh well, at least they still intend to get 2 million units out by the end of December. The important thing is to just build the freakin thing already. It appears they're still sticking to the 6 million units produced by March 2007,...they better start double-timing it!
![]() What I want to know is, when will the silver PS3s be available? The black ones look good and all, but I'm a bit partial to silver. Anyone know? |
