United Kingdom The Master - Jet Li, Yuen Wah & Tsui Hark (88 Films)

Tsui Hark: director, producer and story.

Yuen Wah: action director
[Show spoiler]and sifu.

Language: Cantonese (with English dialogue in places).
^Note: Jet Li is dubbed by someone else.

Runtime: 93 minutes = Hong Kong cut (not the pointless US cut).

Releasing on the 28th of September 2020.
Only available in a "Limited Edition" currently.
£15 on Amazon.

Suggestions to 88 Films:
  • Subtitles - please include 2 sets of English subtitles, 1 without English dialogue and the other with.

  • Cover art - please pay KUNG FU BOB (to do it, unless the cover art is a placeholder).

  • Dragon Fight - would make a quite decent double bill. Jet Li in the US (again), this time with Stephen Chow!

Looking forward to this and more Jet Li. I think Fortune Star's 2018 reel had Black Mask and Dr Wai available.

Fist of Legend, Tai Chi Master and Shaolin Temple would also be great.

Would love Black Mask to get a decent 88 release. I've only ever seen it on a crappy 4:3 dvd.

I hope this gets cool Kung Fu Bob artwork, I don't know if that's placeholder but I think it's ok for the reverse side. Personally not a fan of painted clothes and then a photo for the face. It looks weird.

88 almost always uses the HK poster art as the "announcement photo" (and reversible art), and I know Bob is a fan of the film... so there's that

This movie is so bad that it's awesome. Watched this so much as a kid. Definitely picking this one up.

One of my favorite Jet Li movies despite not being appreciated by the majority, so this is an instant buy for me.

Hope 88 Films gets rights to Dragon Fight, The Bodyguard From Beijing, My Father is a Hero, and releases Hitman soon.

There are multiple tvp releases, some have cantonese audio track.

One Jet Li film that would really benefit from an uncut 4k remaster is Hero. The cinematography is beautiful. But there's no chance of getting it from Miramax.

If 88 released Black Mask I hope they'd be able to get the extended (Taiwan?) version in some way

Hero blew my mind when I first saw it on VCD! Didn't see the trailer or anything. Bluray was an ok upgrade from DVD but still wasn't a true HD transfer

I assume you're talking about Zhang Yimou's Hero? That would be amazing, but the version on BD is the 2004 (?) Miramax version which is slightly different from the HK DVD version. There's an extended version too which is about 10 minutes longer.
The menus/music on the HK DVD are beautiful.

Yeah I own the Region 3 DVD but would love either a 4k remastered blu ray or even a 4k UHD. That courtyard fight in the rain and the fight with the fallen leaves are begging for 4k treatment

Yeah Hero is an incredible, visual treat. I’ve just got the Zoke Culture boxed DVD which is perfectly fine but the opening and closing texts are untranslated so I had to print off a card to slip into the box for reference. The extended dvd had an awful “bouncing” graphic, if I’m remembering correctly. I had to burn a copy with the subtitle track edited so it could be suppressed. Extended version is my “go to” disc.
