Default War will be won by PS3

Paramount may allow hd-dvd to stay alive via(com) life support. The PS3 will sell more units this holiday season than hd-dvd players have sold since coming to market.
Hd-dvd exclusives; Universal, probably not for long, and Paramount.
Blu-ray exclusives; Disney, Sony, MGM, Lionsgate, and 20th Century Fox.
Blockbuster will only be renting blu-rays, and Target has stated that the only hd-dvd players that they will carry will be the Xbox 360 add-on unit, while the blu-ray players will get high exposure aisle endcaps.
Paramount can take their kiddie flicks Transformers, and Shrek 3 over to hd-dvd it doesn't bother me.

lets face it transformers was not that good and shrek is nothing to not have. in fact i had a list of all my BD purchases for the year and not one was paramount, so its really no loss.

Target will carry one Blu Ray player and we will see if it gets a priority endcap when it comes out.

It doesn't matter if we like the Transformers or Shrek or not. It's the fact that they took in a lot of cash at the box office. So it's likely it will sell millions of copies on DVD the day it's released. I imagine it would outsell 300 too as the installed bases of both HD DVD and Blu-ray players are still growing.

So, it is a loss that we aren't getting this on Blu-ray. However, we will get Harry Potter, Spider-Man, Pirates, The Simpsons Movie, Die Hard and more which are guaranteed to sell tons of copies.

So no worries. Have faith, we will succeed. :-)

I hope those target endcaps are like the BD ones at BestBuy where they have a big bravia, the S300 beside a PS3, and alternating Spidermans, Cars, and PoTC3!

I don't agree that Shrek 3 was a kiddy flick. I know I enjoyed the humor more than my 4 yr old niece that tagged along. I'll miss it cause I won't be buying it on SD - Paramount can get mounted with no lube - m'kay. . .

Oh I have faith, especially with Fox's lineup later this year...that will bring in a lot of new people i bet, plus word of mouth as well....just got to best Buy and look at the Blu Ray section and tell people its so amazing they might die if they don't own it, and then knock over the HD DVD section and leave

I think blu-ray does still have the advantage, but I still think its too soon to say things are over or predict any winner.

I am not so sure the PS3 will continue to have much of an affect. I think we've already seen it taper off. Just look at the past few months. Blu-ray got its 2:1 lead and its pretty much kept it since it got it. It hasn't however exceeded it by much. Overall 2:1 is where its been for awhile. During this same time, there has been a ton of positive blu-ray news. Target, Blockbuster..etc. And during all this, still 2:1. Now there's some good HD DVD news. So it just makes me wonder how things will be affected.

The rest of this year will certainly be interesting and will give us all a better indication of where things will go from here.

And just a correction to the above - Blockbuster will rent both Blu-ray's and HD DVD's online. Only new stores carrying HD titles will be blu-ray exclusive. The 250 initial test stores will still carry HD DVD.

I can't stand the Best Buy blu-ray section. Everything seems so expensive. If you buy 4 movies at Best Buy, you could probably get the same titles and save close to $25 at amazon, if not more!

if you like HD media Best Buy is more like Worst Buy. There prices are all in the 30-40 dollar range, i really got to know who buys HD from them.

I think people who feel the need for instant gratification. I'll admit when I first got my PS3, I bought a couple of movies there. It was painful though and the only time I've done it since is when I got a gift card.

I completely agree. I've only bought one bd movie from Best Buy (Lethal Weapon), and when they rang it up it was $24.95 the sticker $ on the box was $18.99. Of course, I got it for the lower price. It was only reasonably priced by way of mistake.

Are there any B&M stores where you can get movies at a decent price? I have seen posts stating Fry's has good deals, but there aren't any in my area.

I disagree with this just based on the number of, what I consider, premium titles coming as Blu-ray exclusive. I'd expect the 2:1 to get much closer to 3:1. I also think there will be massive pull-through this holiday from the PS2 owners that are looking to upgrade and not lose use of all their current stuff. 5 BDs per upgrade!

meh....the employee discount brings it down to amazon prices or lower usually
but aside from that...amazon is always gonna be lower than any retail store....go to CC, Walmart, Target....the BD are generally the same price(disregarding weekly sales)
websites are almost always cheaper than retail outlets....look at newegg.com for example

most people I have come in are more into the gratification of walking away from the store with movies in their hand with their new player ready to watch when they get home instead of waiting for it to come in the mail

I'm not sure your disagreeing though You are saying that you expect it to change. I was talking past and present. I think it could change in the future, I'm just saying there's no evidence to back that.

And PS2 owners aren't guaranteed use of their current stuff - the 80GB PS3 is software based backwards compatibility, isn't it?

It's mainly the older end games from the PS2 that don't work. I can't honestly see someone not buying a PS3 cos they can't play Fantavision or Smugglers Run on the PS3.

The PS3 has never been aimed to constitute the entire market. Sony certainly doesn't want it to be the premier Blu-ray player; it's too expensive to produce, and does way too many things that most movie watchers don't need.

That said, it still adds its weight to the install base, and it's doing a great job of keeping Blu-ray in the lead for the time being while the BDA gets their rear ends in gear and pushes pricing down to a more mainstream level.
