USA Piracy, What are your thoughts on this

hey guys,

I came across this article on the Internet http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/Movi...acy/index.html
it is about the wolverine movie being leaked on the internet for viewers. The movie is scheduled for release on may 1st. Now I am no fan of film piracy, it is in a way stealing someone else's hard work, as a matter of fact it is true. Piracy is a serious issue that is contributing to Box Office slump, I came across this link to see the serious consequences of piracy and thought I should share it with you guys. http://portal.unesco.org/culture/en/...f/piracy_e.pdf Now let me know what are your thoughts about this serious matter?

Quote:
LOS ANGELES – "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" isn't due in theaters until next month, but the prequel has already hacked its way online.
A high-quality, full-length work print of the 20th Century Fox film appeared online Tuesday evening. The studio said it had the file removed, but copies quickly propagated and continue to appear on several file-sharing Web sites.
The movie focuses on the beginnings of Hugh Jackman's clawed Marvel superhero Wolverine and is set for a May 1 release.
Fox vowed in a statement Wednesday that the source of the "stolen, incomplete and early version" of the movie would be prosecuted and said the FBI and MPAA are investigating. The studio also insisted that the version of the film posted online was "was without many effects, had missing and unedited scenes and temporary sound and music."

Quote:
LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Someone stole an "incomplete and early version" of the next installment in the blockbuster "X-Men" movie series and posted it on the Internet this week, according to the studio that owns the billion-dollar film franchise.
Twentieth Century Fox said the FBI was investigating who leaked "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," which is set for release in U.S. theaters May 1.
The digital file quickly spread across the Internet and was available for free, but illegal, downloading from hundreds of easily found Web sites.
"The source of the initial leak and any subsequent postings will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law; the courts have handed down significant criminal sentences for such acts in the past," the studio's statement said.
Removing the pirated files from the Internet may prove an impossible challenge, an industry source said. This source did not want to be named because of the sensitive nature of the matter.
Although the studio said it was removed from the Web site that first hosted it, the digital file has probably been downloaded tens of thousands of times, the source said.
"It's not removed from the Internet," the industry source said. "It's still there."
Twentieth Century Fox downplayed the value of the pirated copy, noting that it was not the final version.
"It was without many effects, had missing and unedited scenes and temporary sound and music," the studio said.
Online movie reviewer Kent Lundblad said he was given a copy by a friend just hours after the rough "Wolverine" first appeared on a Web site Tuesday afternoon.
"Even in this rough form, it's much better than the last 'X-Men' outing or anything Fox has given us in a long, long time," Lundblad said in a review he wrote after watching it.
He said the movie is a rough cut, using placeholder images in many sections and special effects that look like "video games 12 years ago."
He said he suspects that the final movie will look much different than the pirated version, with scenes that were re-shot.
Lundblad, a 25-year-old who describes himself as "a total nerd," said he will see the movie at its midnight premiere May 1. He bought his ticket weeks ago online, he said.
Steve Zeitchik, who covers the film industry for The Hollywood Reporter, said the studio's biggest concern may be that having people view a rough cut "completely throws the studios off their game" of building a positive buzz for the movie.
"If people see this movie, and they don't like it, and they tell their friends, and their friends blog about it, and it just spreads throughout the blogosphere, there are a lot of people that don't even get near a pirated copy of this film, who don't go see [the move in theaters] because of this leak," Zeitchik said.
Whether the leaked video will eventually hurt the film's box office earnings "is very difficult to discern," according to CNN's source.
The latest "X-Men" film stars Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.
Investigators have several tools to help find the source of the leak, including digital watermarking, the studio said.
"We forensically mark our content so we can identify sources that make it available or download it," the studio said.

An FBI spokeswoman confirmed that the agency is "working with the studio and investigating the alleged online compromise of the movie."
The Motion Picture Association of America, the film industry's main trade association, confirmed it was also helping in the probe.

Not necessarily. When I was in High School a workprint of Mortal Kombat floated around before it came out in the cinemas on VHS.

VHS greatly limited the ability of anything to spread, because nothing was more than about 4 generations from the master before it became unwatchable.

The most popular anime fansubs of all time were estimated to have spawned less than 5000 copies, and that was with multiple master-level SVHS tapes in existance.

Today, many shows will reach a quarter million copies in 24 hours

Whenever there is a new BD out in the US, you can always find HD digital download (BT) version on the net (private tracker site) at the same day! You just need bigger hard-drives and some time to download free HD movies. There are also more and more pirated BD out in China, selling for $8usd per disc.

I would really like piracy to go away but the electronics manufacturers are profiting from it more than anyone else.

The only reason DVDr's are so popular is because of movie piracy. Sure some of you might use them for pics or whatever, but most people want to put a disc in a DVD player and watch the movie.

So, until the electronics manufacturers put movies on a format that a PC cannot read its a waste of time discussing it.

The truth about the movie business is that its pretty much funded by fans of movies. Its no longer funded by the people on the street because they have their ways and means of getting it free. Most of the world feel movies are well well overpriced, the actors get too much money so why have a conscience? I'm sure if Keanu Reeves doesn't get his $60m in 5 year deal on something people will get the violins out.

Game programmers have it even worse, they are 9-5 workers yet they get no recognition for it. Most of them are hardly rich either.

I believe anyone who is caught Pirating movies should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. It is wrong. It adds to the cost of Blu-rays.

And no, this Pirate King does not Pirate anything. The name is taken from the musical "Pirates of Penzance."

There are always going to be those who cheat and steal. May God have mercy on them.... because I wont.

I don't get why someone would want to see a movie on their PC recorded on a cam in theater, sound is terrible, the PQ sucks like no end. No thanks for me.

I would rather pay and see it and later get myself a nice BD and just enjoy it the proper way.

Simple, they get Screener copies, DVD rips, Workprints. It's the exact same quality as a standard DVD for all of those, so you don't have terrible PQ or AQ. Cams are rare after the first week of the movie being in a theater.

not just that, but i think the actual chance to watch something (and in this case something big) before it comes out is reason for many people

i download copies of movies to play on my ipod, but only movies i already own, i think it is rediculous that for a movie i already own one, and in some cases of double dipping BD and DVD, two copies of the same movie, i should have to pay for a third copy of the same movie to play it on my ipod, i think all new movies being released should come with a digital copy

Shouldn't media outlets be downplaying this story? I wonder how many people reading the article went and downloaded it.

I did, I don't recommend watching it that way but now I don't plan on seeing it in theatres because... well, it doesn't seem worth it.
