Unhappy UGH! I Have a trojan!

Never had one before...and I guess I should be thankful that it's taken this long.

The problem is that I have no idea how to get rid of it. It's not showing up in Avira but it IS showing up with Spybot and even though it's saying it's deleted, it's still showing up. The worst part is that it's got BOTH my laptop and my desktop infected (they infected each other...guess it was cybersex...tee hee).

Can anyone recommend the best remover? How the hell can I be sure that it'll be gone?

I've looked up this particular virus isn't showing up through a google/yahoo search under the exe file-name. It is, however, showing up when I do a search for the type of trojan that Spybot is saying it is.

HELP!

Easy way, do you have the name of the trojan? There might be a dedicated uninstaller online. Google for the name of the trojan and uninstaller.

Hard way:

When you run it with Spybot, do you get a location for it? You might need to crawl through your registry to find where it is in there, and remove the key for it. First try using start->run->msconfig to see if it is in the startup section. If it is, remove it there. If it's not, run Highjack This to see if you can find a location for it. If you get the location, reboot to command console, go to that location, manually delete the file, then go to Windows, and go through the registry to find where it starts up and delete it.

Best just to reformat. It doesn't take very long, sometimes even less time than battling a virus. That way you leave no traces of the virus on your computer.

If I had a copy of Windows, sure. But I don't.

Try malwarebytes.org. They have instructions for removing a lot of junk. I use ESET antivirus and that for me blocks everything.

No offense, but this is too extreme for this phase of the OP's virus-removal war. Formatting, while good in that it makes your computer like new again and does indeed wipe it of a virus, is pretty much a last-resort scenario. This is especially true if the infected computer has a lot of personal data that must be backed up. Then you've got all the re-installation of whatever programs you use frequently. I agree that it's a good way to go if you really can't fix it any other way, but like I said it's definitely a last-resort course of action. Re-installation of all your programs takes a lot of time; definitely more time than the average procedure for removing a virus.

Like others have said, look for the sites that have virus-specific removal instructions. These are usually pretty good, although they generally are pretty involved as well. The best DIYs for virus (and spyware and such) removal are the ones that tell you exactly how to do it -- where they don't leave anything up for interpretaion. Right down to every last detail with how to find your regedit (if necessary) and all that.

Good luck!

I wouldn't say it is too extreme. You can spend hours trying to get rid of a virus, just to have lingering effects from it that you cannot find. It would be better time spent backing up your personal data and starting from scratch. I try to do it once a year just as maintenance on all of my computers. Trust me, this comes from years of experience cleaning up other peoples computers. Sometimes it is best just to cut your losses.

OP - Since you don't have an OS CD try this.

If Spybot doesn't find it, I have found this online scan finds a lot the others don't.

If it finds files and cannot kill them. Either manually delete them in safe mode, or use killbox to get rid of them.

I totally respect that, but quite whole-heartedly disagree that it's the right thing to do at this point. Make no mistake about it: I'm a huge fan of formatting a computer. I've done it probably a hundred times (mostly on others' computers). The computer I use most frequently for my personal and work stuff takes a long time to format and get back to speed. I've got tons of apps that I need -- apps that not only take a long time to install due to large file size, but that they all need to be updated when you re-install. This may or may not apply to the OP, though.

My only point is that if one isn't particularly computer-savvy, a reformat is too involved to do right now...to say nothing of the fact the he doesn't have an install disc, which makes it difficult anyway.

I'm sure either way he'll/we'll get it figured out.
