Default Should We Even Hold a Community Best Of Voting This Year?

Hey y'all. How are all of you surviving in the madness of the world? Me, I've been going internally mad and becoming deeply upset with how much of a mess we're in.

So now that I've got your attention, I've been doing some thinking lately: Should we even hold a community poll this year for the films of 2020? I love doing them as much as any other member of the site but given how many new films have been pushed back this year, I almost feel like it wouldn't be worth it to do it. Or if we do a community vote, it should be like an alternative like looking over past years or try and construct our own "Greatest Films of All Time" list.

Of course, this is just my opinion. For all I know, our great thewerepuppygrr might have something planned (hope they're doing okay) but I'm all for other opinions and ideas.

Thanks for listening and hope y'all stay safe.

I would like one, although I'd understand if it doesn't happen.

I've seen a fair amount of 2020 movies, that I can arrange a top ten.

2020 is like a movie, or TV series.

Push it back by a few months, most likely.

I’m under the impression that we’re still getting a flood of new releases late 2020, early 2021, with the Oscars ceremony already announced for a later date (April IIRC?). Perhaps that would be the time to have the voting thread in motion, so that we don’t go past May 1st without votes being tallied.

Depending on where the world is by say....December with theaters open, will ultimately decide whether it’s worth starting up a community voting thread. My personal opinion: We should do one regardless. There’s enough films out there now to warrant a Top 10 at the very least. Then you factor in the inevitable studio releases that will occur before year’s end, even by straight to VOD.

Personally, I'm all for having the 2020 poll happen.

Don't our yearly polls usually require a minimum limit of 25 or so movies? It'd probably be harder for many voters to reach that this year, and it makes me wonder if we should lower the limit to encourage participation.

I'm not against doing an alternative form of list either.

I’d likely not take part in one if there was one because I haven’t watched all that much this year. I’m just not a huge fan of digital purchases or rentals, so it depends what becomes available to stream by the end of the year.

That said, I can’t see why we can’t have a poll this year. Probably have to adjust the rules a little as I don’t think that many people will have enough film for a vote to count by the end of the year. I’d happily take part in an a new all time best list though.

Perhaps we could do just a top 10 instead of a top 25, or maybe postpone it a little like the Oscars and include films released in the first months of 2021.

I think I've only seen 6, MAYBE 7 or more, new films this year.

I think we should have one as usual regardless of how the rest of this year turns out. 2020 is what it is and there have been movies released this year. There should be enough between theatrical releases from early this year, direct to steaming, and direct to video/on demand for people to make a list.

I don’t think we should include films released in early 2021 because that will alter the voting for next year’s list. Either way I’ll participate and try to watch a good number of films where I feel confident enough to make a decent list. I’ve seen 20 films from this year so far.

If no best of list for 2020 is coming, I think we should have a top 100 Japanese film list voting instead!

I've seen more than 10 movies this year, closing in on 20. I can definitely pull together a list. The bottom half will be garbage, but thats fine lol

Most posters here probably already have their 5/5 review of Tenet written, they are just waiting for character names to plug in before posting it.

You've already written your 0/5 review, right?

Definitely think it's a bust this year. Think sports should be postponed this year as well. Maybe it's time for an update of AFI's 100 Greatest films of all time list, it's been a while. Maybe and hopefully everything can be regrouped and in play next year.

I was going to make a "Which fictional movie planet would you go to escape the pandemic" thread. But then I realized that pretty much most movie planets have things that are trying to kill you.

I think it's good idea to reduce the minium number to 10 but no to cancel it. There won't be another 2020 unless the calendar resets so whether this is a bad year for movies or not won't magically change. Look at it from angle that you can later look back and see the effect of Corona had on the years movie supply.

And no one knows how badly corona will be affecting 2021. We are still going to deal with corona next year and it will still keep having an effect.

We could try another decade, the 2000s would be interesting.
