Default Whether You Love 'Em Or Hate 'Em, Say 10 Good Things About Fox's X-Men

1. Hugh Jackman's Wolverine
2. Most of the films are critically fresh.
3. Helped pioneered the superhero genre that is today.
4. Helped Kevin Feige get a career over at Marvel.
5. Magneto
6. Takes risk by making R-rated films.
7. Takes itself seriously, and not too many corny Whedon-ish jokes.
8. Better Female Characters.
9. Great scores.
10. Self-awareness.

1 and 5 are one of the bad things. Way too much of those characters. Better females? Nebula alone blows away any characterization from Fox.

1- Terrific and creative film-making
2- Intense, poignant, brilliant, superbly-written, drama-filled screenplays
3- Xavier (both)
4- Magneto (both)
5- Wolverine
6- Mystique (both)
7- Excellent action scenes with impressive FX/CGI
8- Magnificent story-arcs from movie to movie, trilogy to trilogy
9- Real actors, not comedians
10- Not disguised, childish, aimed-at-children superhero comedies like the MCU

11- Even the minor X-Man with small screentime is well-characterized, well-written and COMPELLING to see.

1. Logan
2. X-Men: First Class
3. X-Men 2
4. The Deadpool films marketing campaign
5. Deadpool’s success for making Logan happen
6. The Quicksilver sequences
7. Michael Fassbender and Ian Mckellen’s Magneto performances (ignoring the shit films though)
8. Will.I.Am’s Awards caliber performance in Origins
9. That bit in Apocalypse where he scans the TV for the whole of Human history like it’s the internet.
10. That bullet train bit from Wolverine.
Bonus point. The toad line from the first X-Men film.

#2 Mutant Master of Hyperbole

You literally cannot make one single post without resorting back to this childish MCU bashing.

Someone asks you to compare DC with Fox, you ignore them and go back to Marvel.

Look, we get it. You're very upset that soon the world will see much better X-Men movies and these will be left behind.

Almost covered all the buzz words, it is like the back of a VHS box. Terrific, awesome, non stop action, verbs, brilliant, intense.

  1. Casting. Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Famke Janssen, Anna Paquin, Halle Berry, Kelsey Grammer, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender--it's a big and prolific cast. Most characters have a moment to shine. Even though there are one or two low points, there are also moments where the performances are phenomenal.
  2. Most action scenes are awesome. Such as, the train station scene. The Liberty Island fight. The White House fight. The entire Alkalai Lake sequence. The jet fighters going through tornadoes. Pyro blowing up cop cars. Magneto tossing trucks like they're tin foil. There's loads of awe-inspiring spectacle across the series and none of the movies have ever outright bored me.
  3. I always found the X-Men stories fascinating, and I've always been intrigued by the world-building and the way the different factions of mutants interact and fight to influence the rest of the world in terms of politics and legislation. The civil rights allegory interests me. I even like how it all comes to a head with the apocalyptic scenarios involved in Days of Future Past. And it all still finds time to give the characters just the right amount of depth to make the stories worthwhile.
  4. Going with the above bullet--as a sci-fi fan, the idea of mutation as the basis for superpowers does excite me and it's always a joy to see the sheer scope of the idea shown on-screen. We have a guy with claw hands. A guy who shoots a laser out of his eyes. A woman who causes storms. A guy who makes ice. A guy who makes fire. A kid who changes TV channels by blinking. A teleporting blue devil thing. Shapeshifters. Mind-readers. A magnet man. Just about any power you can imagine is given to us, and shown in a way that's usually funny, exciting, or interesting.
  5. The more I watch the first original film, the more impressed I am by how fast it moves. The cuts are swift, the scenes are short, and it manages to shove in loads of characterization, exposition, and personality with just fleeting views of expressions, imagery, and narrative action. It's a very economical film where less is actually more.
  6. I admire how, in X2, the film shows how Stryker's son tricked Professor X by invading his mind and screwing with his whole reality. The way the film shows all of this with perspectives and such is quite mind-bending.
  7. While the music scores for all the movies are decent, I am especially smitten by Henry Jackman's score for First Class.
  8. Logan was a decent movie. It naturally stands out from the rest for being a gritty, R-rated neowestern. But I admire it the most for taking the effort on the characters and their relationships to give all of the action weight.
  9. I never had any gripes about the production design. I know fans may prefer costumes that would match up with the comics more, but everything else is eye-popping. I love how the first movie has a lot of polished metal with its sets and props (even on the DVD/BD covers). Most vehicles, locations, gadgets look really slick. It all looks and feels futuristic, but in a creditable way.
  10. Rebecca Romijn as Mystique.

Here's my list...
  • Patrick Stewart & James McAvoy as Professor X.
  • Ian McKellen & Michael Fassbender as Magneto.
  • Famke Janssen & Sophie Turner as Jean Grey.
  • James Marsden as Cyclops (sadly underused).
  • Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique (given much more than Rebecca Romijn).
  • Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler (best role in X2, looking forward to his Doomsday return).
  • Brian Cox as Stryker (making him a military man instead of a preacher was a good call).
  • Rose Byrne as Moira (perfect for James McAvoy).
  • First Class (loved the '60s setting).
  • Days of Future Past (best film in the series, especially the Rogue Cut).

All of that said, one of my biggest complaints about Fox handling those movies was their over-reliance on Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. It's not personal; I like the character and Hugh is a great actor. But Stan Lee & Jack Kirby created those characters to be a team, not a one-man assault.

Note: I haven't seen all of the X-Men movies.

Hugh Jackman
Patrick Stewart
Ian McKellen
Famke Janssen
Brian Cox
Michael Bay had nothing to do with the series
Good action sequences
Good visual effects
The ones I saw theatrically were in focus
I positively loathe Days of Future Past, but watching it was less painful than recovering from surgical kidney removal

Just curious, but why all the dislike for Days of Future Past? Is it because Logan was the linchpin for both teams? It actually made sense for a change, due to his healing factor, unlike previous films where it seemed like he outshone everybody else. He was still a central character in the story, but almost an observer, with most of the tale involving Charles, Erik, and Raven.
