However should be archived on 16:9 digibeta, so hopeful for a good upscale on this one as it should look much better free of old DVD artefacts.
Unfortunately, the BBC are hit and miss when it comes to their upscales. |

I remember this when it came out, hadn't heard of the books but found it humourous and kind of weird/dark too.

Never seen this but I can't help but think whoever came up with the insult of 'Gormenghastly' just used it because they wanted to be clever rather than because the mini series was actually terrible.

I remember that insult being used and people saying it was "like a panto" etc.

So it was faithful to the book then?

According to the Web site, this title is still not available for US shipping. Other titles are shipping, though. It’s a bit maddening, but Diabolik has ordered some to sell from their site. It won’t be available for pre-order due to time constraints, but should available near the street date.

Anyone watched this yet?
What's the verdict? |

I finished watching it last night. The programme itself has aged well. The blu-ray is as good as could be expected I think. Some of the darker scenes suffer a bit in the upscaling. The ancient SD CGI is definitely showing its age.

My verdict - unsure. It's looks very soft, almost as if they've done an unwanted DNR pass on an already clean digital image but I can't actually tell without the old DVD to compare to.
EDIT: I see Sloejoe has posted an image - that's exactly illustrative of what I see in motion on my TV. As I say, I honestly can't tell if it was always like that (the 20 year old digital work) or is newly done. |

I just don't get why they so consistently do it. Is it the vertical line blanking they have it in for?
You know what would have been really lovely? A straight, professional upscale from the original Digibeta without this unnecessary work. Last edited by oddbox83; 09-23-2020 at 12:42 PM. |
