Thumbs down PreScreened "Wolverine" at the theater last night...

...and it really wasn't that good. There was a lot of stunning work with animation, wires and the film itself, but the story wasn't that great. I love movies that are based on comics...lately they are about the freshest concept in the movies, and for a good one I'm prepared to sit for up to three hours, which this film could have easily done, but they crammed too much stuff into just an hour forty five. For example: Jackman spends just about 7-10 minutes on screen with the other mutants in the movie when they are on their task force and later they show up and act like they've been friends for 20 years and you got no character development behind them at all. A serious backstory involving Gambit is allured to, but never revealed. There's like 3 dozen other serious name mutants in the movie that are never formally presented. This wasn't a great story of Wolverine's past...it was more about an event that he was trying to stop. Let's put it this way...I would compare it to Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. All it's really good for is tying a couple of loose ends and some cool visuals.

Although character development is essential, the key question here is was it presented well enough around Wolverine...? It seems you have noticed more about the flaws presented in other characters than focused on who the movie was set to explain in the first place, right? If you consider the underdeveloped characters simply as a supporting cast, how well was it as a stand-alone origins story? Is it still a plot-driven story as opposed to the character-driven story we're all expecting to see?

Fair enough...in regards to Wolverine himself, it showed glimpses of his development from his youth to his current state of being in the opening credits. Once the credits stopped it pretty well settled in on the mid 1970's where we saw his 7-10 minutes with the mutant task force and Stryker and then his evolution from bone to adamantium. That gets you just short of the 35 minute mark. The next 15 minutes center around him and his love interest and then the third act is about his personal vendetta. It was a cool movie, Im certainly not saying it was awful...just a lot of hype.

cool i still have hopes for this movie though, i also find a lack of character development troublesome and detrimental to a good flick, but the masses especially the target audience for this flick have SHORT attention spans, and unlike us movie fans, they prefer a movie at about an hour and twenty, anything longer and they get fidgety and distracted lol.

Did you happen to see the leaked version on the internet? If so, was it basically the same movie with the special effects finished?

No, I haven't seen the leaked version. My +1 for the pre-screening had, though, and he said that they were identical except for the finished effects sequences.

Yeah, she was in it for as long as it might take you to snap your fingers. You have to assume it's her though, because they don't come out and identify her. The only small part mutant that is CLEARLY identified is "Scott Summers" at about the 8-9th grade age.
